Lost key for locking lugs

Good day,

I have a 2009 Cooper S Hatch that came with locking lugs. Unfortunately the key is nowhere to be found. I did find a box with a part number of 35 13 6 776 076 that contained the original lugs. I contacted my local dealer and they looked up the part number and it was a locking lug set part number. I had him order that part and just picked it up. Unfortunately the keys are completely incompatible with the locking lugs that are on my car. They are several mm to big so they won't even come close to fitting.

Does anyone have any knowledge of the locking lugs that came with this model of the car or ideas how I can get the damned things off without damaging the car?

Thanks,
Kurt

Does it look like this?

I have an '09 HT and these are on my MINI. Part #36136776076 Check out ECSTuning...I'm sure they have the ones you need (if they are from MINI). Are you sure they are the factory locks?...they may be aftermarket.

If you can, take a picture and post it.

would you want every set of locks to use the same key? when I had a set of these there WAS a label with a key code for ordering a replacement, it was in the glove box at delivery with the key socket ... look for something stuffed in the owner's manual, you might get lucky. If not ... read on:

any decent garage can get them off ... but they will get trashed in the process.

One way: An extractor socket can be hammered on to the lock lug and then it is removed just like a stripped bolt

In a worst case I tack weld a stud to the end of the lock and turn it out . . .

It's funny you mention that because I've had cars in the past that had the same key for every lock set sold. Crazy Didn't make sense to me, but eh...what do I know! Lol Hopefully, MINI went the smart route (based on what you mentioned, it appears they did)

I've seen a shop remove them before. Never even thought about the tack weld...that's another good method

Thanks for the mention DTH2CHRM .

Yea, there are two styles the above . The

Wheel Lock Set W/ Lug Key (M14x1.25) - Priced Each Set

http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/SiteSearch/36136776076/

Which comes with two keys and with the key number you can get new keys.

-------------------
-------------------

This is the other style you cannot get separate keys for.

Wheel Lock Set W/ Lug Key (M14x1.25) - Priced Each Set

http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/SiteSearch/36136792850/

Always check the glove box, secret second glove box above. The trunk ( boot ) tray under the rear carpet. Or in the center console or armrest if you have it.

Thanks

The OEM locking Lugs are mfg by McGard in NJ. A new locking key can be purchased from them for about $12.00. Inside the original kit was a small business size card with a code, they need that code to make another key for you.

If you don't have the card, most BMW dealers have the same locking lug kits but under different part no. ( 14mm ) And while most MINI dealers don't have them, BMW service departments often have a set/kit of lug keys for the ones they sell. You may get lucky and one of the keys from an emergency kit may just fit.

Removing them is not easy w/o the key but doable....expect some damage to the wheel finish around lug holes if you go this route.

Remember to only hand tighten the locking lugs, never use an air gun to install or remove them.... !!! Eva !

Thanks all. The ones I have look like the ones that have been posted from ECSTuning. The kit that I got from my BMW dealer looks like that also. Unfortunately they are larger in diameter than the ones on my car.

I have been through the car will a fine tooth comb and I can not find the key or a card with a code on it. The new box came with a code in it but there is no code in the car or in the old box. Without that code I suspect that I am going to have to go to a garage and have them turn the old lugs off and take a chance on damaging the rims.

The box that my lugs came in has the same part# as yours. The code# for mine is 30 and the key has 13 splines. Count the splines in your lug and see if they match?

I wouldn't bother with the locks on oem wheels. Any good tire shop will have the removal socket and they come right off. $2-3 a piece for regular lugs and never worry about it again. Autozone sells the removal set if you want to DIY, depending where you are they may have a set you can rent for next to nothing.

Check with your local BMW or MINI dealer. They should have these for when people bring in cars for service and don't have the socket or people buy used cars and the previous owner forgot to give it to them.

I'm sure you've looked, but I'd be willing to bet a Mini tank of gas that the lug is somewhere in your car. I can't imagine why anybody would keep it anywhere else. While my Mini doesn't have locking lugs, another car I have it's clipped to the lug wrench.

I have been through it top to bottom three times.

I'll take a tank of gas! My Mini was missing the key, as well as my VW. People take them out or shops forget to put them back. I bought 4 regular lugs and local tire shop zipped the locks right off. They were surprised I had the bolts, I guess most people don't plan ahead.

I did go to the local Mini dealer and they had no keys that fit mine. I am going to try Advance and if that doesn't work I will have my local garage pull them off.

SZRickety,

Meet me at "Minis on the Mack" in August and I'll fill your tank up in St. Ignace, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Last year was the first year and we tried to break the world record for the number of minis in a convoy...I think we hit 860 (which was shy of the record).

Sounds great, but my wife will be 8 months pregnant then and no way to get away. Maybe next year!

SZrickety, Congratulations on the baby! But...I was confused and meant that last message for Pakmule. I'll have to stop at two tanks of gas. Either way, everybody should plan on making the trip to the next Minis on the Mack. I'll let you know if I hear anything about a 2014 event.
