Chattering wipers.

Does anyone else have this problem? 2013 Cooper, no mods factory wipers and whatever they put in the fluid reservoir at the dealer. Already took it in once but the problem persists. It was so bad initially that the wipers were leaving black marks on the windshield!

Is there RainX on the windshield? If so, that can cause the chatter. I used a spray wax once on my windshield and it did the same thing. Sounds like there is a film of something on your windshield or blades or both. I would start by cleaning it really well. May have to replace your blades. My two cents. Hope it works out for ya.

Did some more research. It all seems to come back to something being on the windshield. Clean it with a good glass cleaner and microfiber towels. Do go through auto carwashes. Their waxes can build up on the windshield. You never know what is going on your car. Only wash with straight carwashes soap. Not the combo wash wax type.

Might be the angle of the wiper blade. Interesting video about fixing wiper chatter:

get a window scraper - basically a single edge razor blade with a handle and run it all over the glass. You won't believe what comes up. Then go over the glass with a clay bar.

Now it is clean . . .

I agree. Used a glass cleaner with RainX in it on my two week old MINI and the blades immediately began to chatter. I used Mother's California Gold Water Spot Remover to clean the windshield and no more chatter. I will never use RainX products again. If you don't have RainX on it, there must be some othe contaminant. Clean it with the Mother's product or use some of the other suggestions like a razor blade scraper or clay bar and I bet the chatter will go away. If the blades are also contaminated, try cleaning them with a good glass cleaner and if that doesn't work, replace them.

Wipe down your wiper blades with a rag an some mild cleaner( I just use my car wash soap).....

Mine had the same exact problem, blades were clattering and leaving black smudges on my windows.... I wiped off the blades and Sooo much grit and grime came off them, and I've never had the problem since....I just make it part of my car washing routine to give the blades a good wiped own. IDE recommend at least once a month.

In post # 3 above I think the poster meant to say 'do NOT go through automatic car washes.'

Thanks for all the advice. All the suggestions above that say to thoroughly wash the window then change the blades... That's what the dealer did last time and the problem persists. :( (I do not have rain-x)

Dang! I feel your pain - chattering blades are so aggravating. When the dealer changed the blades did they put on another set of OEMs? If so, it might be time to try an aftermarket design. richardsperry may be on to something with the Bosch suggestion - I had a "chirp" that persisted through two sets of OEMs and a set of PIAA Silicones, but it went away with a set of Bosches.

I have the same problem and have had the problem since day one when I got the car with 7 miles on it back in July. I've washed the car a dozen times or more (at least weekly) so there is NOTHING on the windshield.

I figure either the wipers blades are cheap or the arm angle needs to be adjusted like in the video.

I'll probably just replace the blades and see how that goes.

I would try the razor with a lubricant such as windex or soap as you wash. Then clay with the same. then glass cleaner. This is at a minimum if you are having issues.

My mini had tiny specks FROM THE DEALER NEW (I ordered the car) and the wipers made noise. Dont assume that a new car does not have stuff on the glass OR paint. visit detailing 101.

Ideally, follow with some glass polish if you have a machine to do so and follow that with "Hydrophic glass cleaner" like Stoner invisible glass cleaner which I recently found handy at my auto parts store.

Mine are silky smooth after the above treatment. Replace the wipers as a last effort.

Have some fun and search you tube for Drive Clean's glass cleaning segment. OCD at its best but isnt that what we're here for

I tried the razor blade and clay and wash method today, so we'll see what happens next time it rains.

I wouldn't assume that the dealer really cleaned the windshield properly. Even the very best glass cleaners won't do the job. In order to properly clean, you need to do something more like the razor blade, clay bar, or Mother's water spot cleaner. I use MaGuire's glass cleaner which is one of the very best but after I am done with it, when I wipe my micro fiber towel across the windshield, I can feel drag. Then after cleaning with the Mother's product, I do the same and feel no drag. Try one of the extra cleaning methods on a small section of your windshield and wipe from the uncleaned section to the properly cleaned section and you will feel the difference.
