Please advise

Hello all,

I got a nice crack in my windshield took the car to safelite and they quoted me for over $800 stating they needed to order special molding from the dealer.

I call three local pop auto glass shops they quoted me for more than half that no special molding necessary. All these places now have a lifetime guarantee for leaks anyway.

Special molding needed or not needed that is the question?

Thanks everyone.

Not needed unless they break the clips. Have you called your insurance to see if it is covered? Also did you call a Safelite Dealer or Safelite direct?

Can you tell me where these clips are located so I can check to see if they were damaged in the install.
I have a $500 deductible.

I went directly to a safelite location.

I'm having a guy come out to my work Monday to install a new windsheild for $300. Fingers crossed he goes a good job.

Thanks for the info.

Do yourself a favor and call SafeLite direct to see if there are different prices. The trim clips would not cost this much

Very few people should carrry a Comp deductible of $500, just doesn't make financial sense. And owners of MINIs with the windshields that pit and chip easily especially shouldn't.

Call your insurance company and ask them for details about a windshield claim. Many have $0 deductible.

+ 1,000
I was in the glass industry for years. Very rare to see a comp deductible that high.

Depends on your insurance and what dropping your deductible down does to the premiums vs how often you are placing a claim. Mine are that high simply for the cheaper premiums. Rock chips are free, but whole windshield replacements are 500 unless there is some clause I haven't seen. I have progressive. Let me know if I'm wrong.
Big reason for comprehensive here in San Antonio is deer and hail storms, though I once got my exhaust replaced years ago as a comprehensive because I hit a huge rock (about the size of a basketball) that was in the middle of the road. Insurance wanted it to be collision, I talked them into comprehensive.

As I said.... high Comp deductible may work for a very few people. And I bet if you did the math, even you would benefit from a lower one.

All I can say is every policy I ever had, had a $50 deductible for windshield replacements and I never asked specifically about having a lower deductible for windshield.

Some policies have language written into them that allow for a specific deductible for glass replacement that may be lower than your Comp deductible. But not many. Even fewer will waive the deductible for glass repair, thinking it will cost less in the long run to repair chips until waiting for them to turn into cracks.

I have Progressive and they included full glass coverage for free. Geography may be a factor??

I cracked my '11 windshield over the winter, thankfully Mass considers windshield a safety item, therefore no deductible! I decided to bring the mini to the dealer since I wanted all oem parts, $540 later and paid by geico with no questions asked. the dealer did a great job
