Racing Spoiler Options

Well the search bar has not turned up anything I was looking for. I posted this in the interior/exterior modifications with no luck so now I'm posting here since it seems like this is the place most people look and respond:

I changed my mind on what I wanted to do with my JCW. I was going to purchase the Fubrication spoiler but I want something more race purpose. I've looked at the C Wing from M7 and the Challenge Wing but I would rather not go with them if I can. I'm looking for something more like this:

http://www.supercars.net/Pics?viewPi...D=6&pID=866116

or

http://www.minimotorsport.com/news/m...the_green_hell

Any ideas where I might find something like this?

Those teams probably fabbed the wing themselves. Don't forget you can buy the GPII rear wing for a low low price of $1000

Would you be interested in the GP2 wing if I could get you one?

Ya I was looking at that but I'm not trying to convert my car into a GPII. Just an awesome canyon-carver/track day vehicle. There is a local shop here in CO (by that I mean it's about 70 miles away) that has raced R53's but I do not see anything for an R56. They might be able to help. If not I will probably go with the M7 wing, but I was just wondering if anyone might know of some lesser know company that sets up Minis to race-spec or something.

In the next day or so I'm going to start a build thread on here so you all can see what I'm trying to do with the car. Basically from an aesthetic point I want it to look like the Mini Challenge replica/what I would think a Mini DTM car would look like (hence, the spoiler inquiry). As far as power: not looking to achieve 300bhp or anything. I think 270hp to the engine is doable but if I don't achieve that number with the upgrades I am getting then I'm not going to be heartbroken. I want to focus more on handling for mountain curves and the occasional track day.

Figure out where the local racers are getting their aero built and go there. There are shops that specialize in this kind of stuff. Just know it's not going to come cheap.

Oh I was already assuming these things were going to be expensive. It always is for a one-off. But I think it will be more than worth it in the end.

Well solskjaer, I'll get ordering a Challenge Wing soon, I love the Challenge wing and can't image getting anything else. The DuelL wing piqued my interest for a long time, but after seeing it on the FL guy's MINI, I immediately cancelled my order and decided not to play the order.

Solskjaer, seems like you want a fast car. Have you got a spare track wheel/tire set you use yet? Dedicated track tires are going to make you many seconds quicker than aero mods. Not trying to burst your bubble, but just asking.

I want it to be quick, yes. Half the interior is stripped and more will be removed in the future. It's still a daily drive until the dealer warranty on the engine I replaced late October of 2012. Nothing too extreme yet. I want to get my suspension, braking, and handling in general all sorted. On the list at the moment is:

KW V2 Coilovers
Vorshlag camber plates
Front end links
Madness Motor Works 22mm rear sway bar
WMW 15mm wheel spacers
TCE 6piston Wilwood caliper kit
WMW Slotted/drilled front rotors

As for the wheels I'm going with some light Motegi MR125 with Toyo semi-slicks, but I'm not going to get these wheels until it's 'track ready' to my liking.

This isn't all going to be accomplished within the next month or two. This is a lot of money to spend so it will be a gradual process. After that list will be exterior changes and some of the interior changes (Seats, etc), then I will add some power. I think it would be unwise to void the warranty I have left on the engine so I'm modding the stuff that matters most for a canyon carving/track MINI.

In the meantime I'm honing my driving through some classes.

I do have a M7 Tuning carbon Fiber C-Wing that I have listed in the Marketplace for $800.

Aero is a deep dark hole to be traveling down. With just a wing you're very likely going to get understeer and make the car slower in the straights. You could counter that with a big rear bar but it's not really the "right" way to do it and will make the car unpredictable at best. That means you need a front splitter. And as long as you're doing that why not throw on a full underbody tray and a diffuser. Then you need dive planes on the front bumper. Then some way to evacuate high pressure air from the wheel wells. Then side skirts. Etc. Etc.

It's hard to guess as to how serious you're going with this. You could leave Aero off till later down the road but then if you end up putting on a full aero setup it's going to involve new spring rates on the coilovers and likely re-valving the shocks to control the low speed bump forces. And the KWs likely won't handle it so now you're looking at a set of Koni 28 series or some Penskes or some other high dollar shock.

My suggestions would be to get rid of the KW V2s and go with the TCK double adjustables at a minimum or something like the AST 5200s or Ohlins R&T. I'm not a big fan of big rear bars so I would just stick with the stock bar for now. If you're feeling fancy and getting faster than slowly start adding aero. Starting with a front splitter. Oh and you're not going to be able to fit a very large tire with 15mm spacers. You're looking at running a 235 which for us is et40 in the front and et45 in the rear. Oh and if those Motegis are anything like the SP10s we have then I would skip them. You can only fit those dumb little tuner lugs in them which means you have to use thin-wall special sockets which means you can't use an impact. Screw that. Get something with some room around the lug nuts to make tire changes quicker. And don't forget a stud conversion for your list o parts.

Oh and I would stick to street tires until you've got some serious track time under your belt. The breakaway characteristics are much more gradual and you can hear what the tires are doing. Race tires are super sticky until they suddenly aren't anymore and they're pretty much silent. No tire squeal to tell you what the tires are doing.

Sounds like you're at where I was a couple of years ago. You like the sport and you want it all!! Nothing wrong with that. It's a passion Just don't forget to put in the track time. The nut behind the wheel needs to always be the first focus. Adding all this stuff and not using it to the max is a real down low dirty shame.

I would focus on putting in your seat time first. A lot of it. Suspension and brakes would be next. The stock brakes aren't bad for starting out, especially when you're using the right pads and brake fluid. Stepping up to a big brake kit will get you consistently deeper into the corners without having to ever worry about fade. A 4-piston is honestly enough and the TCE "Plus 3" and "Plus 4" kits fit the bill.

I haven't personally touched aero. I'm not a class A hot shot and destroying everyone in my class so I figure I really don't need it where I'm at.

What i've never really understood is why so many people feel the need to try and add so much downforce to the rear of the MINI. I can see the benefits of reducing drag with a wing, but why would I want to plant the rear or my car more when we're always trying to make the MINI rotate better in the corners because of the natural tendency of a FWD car to want to understeer? I think it would make more sense to add a front splitter to plant the front wheels more so than the rear.

Then there are those that argue about the Nurburgring time of the GP2 and MINI touts that aero had a lot to do with that. That really seems like a load of crap. I would say driver skill, the engine, suspension, and tires made that time possible. The MINI has the aerodynamics of a brick flying down a road so I think aero had the LEAST to do with that time.

Oh the exterior/body stuff isn't going to be added for a while, neither are the wheels/tires. I'm not looking to get put downforce on the rear by way of a spoiler. It was more to go along with the DTM look I want to achieve, but I have always been a function over form guy so I may end up throwing the idea of a rear wing/spoiler out the window if I discover, after a good amount of seat time, that it appears to be more trouble that it's worth. I will get a front splitter and rear diffuser though. I know the MINI has terrible aero but if I can reduce rear drag and even it out in the front, even in the slightest, it would benefit the MINI. I have flirted with the idea of deleting the spoiler altogether and going with the roof cover like the Justa's.

In the build thread I just posted everything is subject to change if I find better options or if things are too impractical when it comes time to buy/install.

I have done quite a bit of seat time on closed courses (not actual races though) so my knowledge of where the limit is on my car as it sits at the moment is decent, but I can always learn and hone more. I'm not Kimi Raikonnen afterall. I do think the GP2 is down to the handling and driver skill. You can't tell me that a MINI is as sensative to aero changes as an F1 car or something built soley for a track, so I think you're 100% correct on that assessment. Although....the Schirra Mini has that ridiculous wing in the back so maybe there is a little something to it. Most likely not enough for an average driver like me to ever notice or require.

I am passionate though. Maybe even to the point of being crazy. I always liked MINIs and always wanted to make one that is somewhat one-off. Trying to make a car both track worthy and a tolerable daily driver, if need be, is a daunting task and can get me into trouble if I'm not careful. I think I'm trying to have my cake and eat it too on some of this so I will make changes as needed. Bottom line is that seat time is the thing that needs the most attention.

Mine has been a track toy and summer fun ride for a couple of years now. When my wife sat in my Sparco Evos with 6-points and said, "You've really done it now Shane..." that's when I knew it was no longer a daily driver at all

Hahaha well at least you're fortunate enough to have an awesome wife! I would imagine most wouldn't tolerate the MINI passion or driver passion. My girlfriend doesn't like how loud it is on the interior and that's just some noise. Wait until it has racing seats and belts like yours haha

My favorite spoiler is the DUELL AG but mostly for works. A ginormous spoiler is not going to do much. If you're a function over form guy, id reconsider getting one. I wouldn't get the DUELL one because the price is outrageous. You might as well get an m7 CF spoiler because they are good looking and there are a few on the marketplace. IMO the challenge spoiler is goofy looking and makes it look too ricey. I however like the GP2 one. Get a light weight spoiler or don't get one at all IMO. You probably wouldn't notice anyways

^You do realize that the DuelL AG and GP2 wings are both fixed wings so there is no adjustability. And the M7 spoiler is based off the Challenge wing, so I'm not sure I understand your reasoning of M7 looking better than the Challenge. M7 has 3 points of adjustment while Challenge has 7 points of adjustment. Food for thought...
