Redline Gear Oil

Mini Lovers!
I am thinking about changing my 07 MCS manual trans gear oil. Has anyone used MT-90 instead of MTL from Redline? I was told MT-90 maybe ok for warm/hot climate.

Redline makes awesome products. The one you might find to be the best for the transmission in the MCS would be MT-85 75w85 GL-4.

The most important part is the GL-4. GL-5 fluids are actually damaging to the syncros.

Thank you! So, you are using MT-85? How does the shifting feel for you comparing to OEM gear oil?

Personally right now I'm not. I've used it in other cars with great results in shift feel. Also have seen multiple good reviews specifically from mini owners saying they also noticed less notchiness when shifting. Its just a great performing brand of gear oil.

Thanks for your INFO InjectedGT! Since Mt-85 grade is between other 2 products I will try it out and see how it feels.

osadan,

I've been running the MT-85 for about 60k miles now. Especially when I first put it in the shifting was much smoother. Hard to say after the initial change whether it was really any smoother. At this point, I'd say the shifting has gone back to being kind of notchy. I'm not surprised though as I felt like getting 50-60k out of it before a change was what I expected. Another fluid change is on my list of to-do's before summer is over.

Thanks jcauseyfd! 60k sounds like solid miles. How long did it take for you to put 60k? The MT-85 will be on my list. I like your CR 08 MCS pixs.

a friend of mine owns a transmission shop ...
he says ALL transmissions, auto and manual, should have fluid changes at 30,000 miles (or less)

i have a 1997 gmc sonoma v6 5 speed 4x4 that i bought new late 1996, the tranny is a getrag that is known to fail around 100,000 miles ...

it now has 291,000 miles and the tranny is working perfectly ... i have been changing the fluid every 30,000 miles (along with the transfer case and both diffs) instead of the GM recommended 100,000 miles

the transfer cases are also known to fail, mine is still original ... GM says the transfer case oil is lifetime

For me that is just over two years worth of motoring.

My understanding... (coming from VW..) is that the GL4 is ok.. the GL5 however has too many additives for shock loading that damage brass syncros in the trans.

For safety's sake.. I only ever.. ever use GL-5 fluids in cars/rears that have NO brass parts in them.

My PERSONAL favorite GL4 rated oil is..

Motul 300.

THAT stuff was pure gold.. I swear it actually "fixed" problems I had had in the past with other cars.

danjreed,
I was told GL4 is a must for MCS I see that Motul 300 is 75W90 grade, just like Red line MT90. So, are you using Motul 300 on your cool looking 2013 Clubman S? I guess you've used Motul 300 on other vehicles because you mentioned "fixed" problems. what kind of problem did you have that Motul 300 was able to resolve?

Well, the Clubman has all of about 1100 miles on it.. So it's got whatever ships from the factory..

But, I ran the Motul in a few VWs.. My 1995 Golf, I used it.. Car was hard to shift in the cold... That was no longer a problem once I made the swap.

The other car I had was a 2001 A4 Quattro. The A4 shifted hard when cold, I got a lot of vibration under load back in the shifter. 2nd gear was crunchy. The fluid was 100,000 miles old... At the advice of a friend.. I changed it with the Motul.

Literally fixed all the issues the A4 had with shifting. Shifting was buttery smooth, 2nd gear worked fine, and cold shifting was excellent.

I had used RedLine in a few older VWs, it was a good product too. But I didn't have issues with those transaxles before. The changes were done just for maintenance.

Changed factory fluid to Redline MTL at 1,100 miles. Shifting was noticeably improved. I now have 34,000 miles and plan to change again (every 30,000 miles or so). I will stick with the MTL. Still shifts very smoothly.

I am glad that I've always been kind of a stickler for the details. I was parusing the amazon and going to add some redline gl4 to my cart when I saw a fair priced gallon of gl5.. of course, the natural tendency is "Well, if Gl4 is good then Gl5 should be better..." My being a stickler and this post has probably saved me a transmission.
