2013 mcs vs 2013 jcw engine specs??

Hi guys,

Although ive been around minis alot over the years and driven a few here or there at track days, auto x events, etc i am new to ownership (my wife just purchased one) and was just looking for some general information. I did try searching the forum and google for this but were unable to find solid facts. So my question to you is what exactly is the difference between the 2013 mcs and jcw engines?? I believe they both now use the N18 engines? Same turbo now or is the jcw still a better unit? Im looking to just get a base feel for things as I believe she will be wanting to modify the car soon lol

thanks for your time!

Correct both now run the n18 engine

The jcw turbo is slightly larger, and has a factory "tune" which is how it has the increase in horsepower. Also I believe the s motor uses 10.5:1 CR pistons while the JCW uses 9:5:1 CR pistons

Hmmm I looked around on the internet and It looked like they had the same compression ratio as far as I could tell. I figured that it had at least had a different filter, exhaust, tune....does anyone have any more detailed info?? turbo differences?? Engine Internals??

I believe the jcw has a lower compression ratio ecause it runs more boost but I could be wrong
Also yes it has a cone type intake as opposed to the s panel intake, however it is still enclosed inside the air box not open in the engine bay
The exhaust is also different, as is the tune which I put in my first post
Turbo difference is size, jcw being slightly larger than the s with larger wheels

Also, doesn't the JCW have a different manual tranny?

Are the compression ratios different? I thought they were the same after the switch to the n18 engine.

The JCW also has reinforced pistons and thicker cylinder walls as well as an upgraded clutch if you get the manual. It also has a different exhaust header and freer flowing muffler.

Sure. As I mentioned, I have not read up on compression ratio for the N18, but everything I have found seems to indicate the same figure.

Here is some items from MINIusa's website on the reinforced clutch: http://www.miniusa.com/#/jcw/JOHN_COOPER_WORKS-m

From the mini website, the JCW has 10:1 CR while the s has 10.5:1. This is for a 2013 model

Thanks for looking into that. I wasn't sure on that one, so I appreciate the info. It makes sense given the higher boost and turbo differences.

Both N18 motors have the same 10.5 CR and really are mirror images of each other. The JCW has a 3mm larger turbo, more aggressive tuning and different valve reliefs on the pistons. The pistons are the same hyper cast material and same strength.

Mario,

Thank you for answering this one !

I also found in the MF link above the same info for the 2011+ JCW

It seems that the only difference, engine wise, '13-JCW vs. '13-MCS engine is the exhst system, the Tune (ECU programming), and the turbocharger.

The JCW R56 N18, 2013 has the same Catalytic converter, same Air airbox, same pistons, same rods, same cylinder head and valves, same camshafts, same intake manifold, same injectors, same clutch, same transmission, same gear ratios, same tires as the 2013 MCS.

2011+ John Cooper Works Tuning Kit for MINI Cooper S

Technical Specification
  • Sports exhaust with chrome finish tailpipes
  • Adapted air filter
  • Modified engine control unit
  • John Cooper Works badges
  • Performance data
  • 200 hp at 5,700 rpm
  • 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) between 1,250 and 5,000 rpm
  • 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) between 1,800 and 5,000 rpm with Overboost function
  • 0-62 mph in 6.6 seconds
  • Top speed 145 mph
