Anyone know if countryman 5x120 hubs fit the r56?

Hello all!

I know there are some threads about changing the bolt pattern using old m3 hubs, but now there is the countryman! Anyone know if the 2010+ countryman hubs fit on the R56??

Well, there was some serious fabrication required, and it was on a R53 platform:

Tried comparing the two hubs side by side?

R56 platform (item 5 - P/N #31226776162):

R60 (Countryman) platform (item 5 - P/N #31209806297):

What isn't shown is the mounting bolt sizes (item #6).
The R56 calls out a M10x30mm, the R60 calls out a M12x30mm...
That tells me it is NOT a straight swap as the holes in the upright casting would be smaller on the R56 platform.

But, give it a whirl as this idea has been thrown around, but no one has confirmed or denied it.

i've studied these diagrams for a bit. the 10x30mm vs 12x30mm doesn't that just mean the bolt is longer and the thread pattern is the same?

the 10 in 10x30 is the diameter, the 30 is the length under the head

The diameter is different, a M10 bolt on the R56 versus a M12 bolt on the R60.
Which means you'd probably have to pilot / bore out the mounting holes on the upright casting (MINI calls it a "carrier").

What the illustration doesn't show is relative scale.
Yes, I would agree that the bearing mounting positions look similar, but they may be larger as the R60 is heavier overall and may need a larger bearing.

The good news to this is that the axle flange nuts (item 7) outlined by RealOEM.com are the same: P/N #31106773005.

Note: the upright castings and the lower control arms between the R56 and R60 are different and do have separate part numbers.

I encourage you if you want to continue, is to do some preliminary checks with just the two hubs and pulling some basic dimensions off them.
Comparing those side by side at a parts counter will give you the best information right from the start.
From there, you'll be able to say, "nope, it won't work" or "let's go to the next stage" and test fit.
If that next stage comes, then we'll discuss brake rotor, carrier and caliper details.

not trying to say its possible, but.....

i read this thread and i too came to thinking the r60's hubs could fit. then i happened to find this review of the r60 suspension and how it differs from the r56.
http://www.edmunds.com/car-reviews/t...alkaround.html

after reading through and looking at the detailed pics, i think i am gonna be the guinea pig to order the r60 hubs and compare them to the r56 hubs. some mods might be needed but if its less than doing a r56 redrill then i will gladly accept.

Hi ej1power,

I found this website -Timken website: http://www.timken.com where the company produce wheel hub for various auto brand. From their catalog it clearly shown that Countryman(not all4 only FWD) R60 rear wheel hub is the same with Cooper R56.

where the part no for Coutryman R60 is exactly the same for Cooper R56. Unfortunately the front does not share the same part now. I would presumed that it is not the same. From the images in the catalog it is worth a try. I have written to them asking if they have custom make 5 lugs wheel hub for R56.

HI Guys,

Update from Timken.

I am very sorry that Timken not entertaining any customized parts. Below is the respond from Timken.

What i ask for was to have it drilled similar to Countryman 5x120 or not drilled at all (no holes), unfortunately i was turned down.

Hi Guys,

I have checked with my BMW parts supplier in Singapore and he had shown me the parts number for both Countryman R60 and Mini Copper R56 wheel hub share the same part number. They are the largest BMW parts supplier in Singapore. According to the supplier it is the same and can be interchange.

By the way, i noticed the F56 also using 5 lugs.

I hope this information is useful.

Okay so a thought, if the hubs ARE interchangeable does that mean you would be able to fit the brake calipers and rotors from the Countryman too.

I presumed that it should be bcos the carrier remain unchanged just the wheel hub. Rotor should be able to use the CountryMan. Can't be certain until someone try it out.

I would make an effort to 3x check that the number of splines inside the hub interconnecting with the drive shaft is the same between the two part #s.
A pair of new drive shafts will run you more than a new set of wheels and tires.

Unfortunately, F56 uses 5x112 lug bolt pattern (same as VW, Audo, Merc), unlike R60's 5x120 (standard BMW lug bolt pattern).

Why BMW went with an out of family wheel lug bolt pattern for F56 I will never be able to rationalize...
