* MINI DTC P0118 - Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit High
When you replaced the thermostat housing, did you replace the Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS) as well?
The ECU is seeing too high of engine coolant temp, usually triggered by a faulty CTS.

I bet the car is running really rough at start up. I believe the code means the thermostat is stuck open. Could be a bad temp. sensor. I had my thermostat changed and it had a bad sensor right from the factory. If you have the old thermostat try changing the new sensor with the old and see if it still runs rough and throws a code.

Replaced and still have the same problem fan runs as if overheating. Starts right up and runs smooth but kicks out P0118 in seconds. Man the reason i replaced this unit was to fix a coolant leak and ive caused more problems for myself, do i need to recode something? Thanks guys for any helpful advice.

I just changed my thermostat. No codes, no nothing! Maybe you need to bleed it out more? I remember when I changed my thermostat I had to top up the coolant 3-4 times (while bleeding the system). Could it be possible that an air buble or something is there? Or it might be that one of your tubes are clogged and maybe thats what caused the coolant leak in the first place?

Hi everyone,

I changed my water pump and that solved the issue. However, I have heard from another member that it may be the thermostat that is causing the issue.

Hope this helps.

Solution to this thread-- same exact issue!

Has anyone ever received resolution on this issue. Had the water pump replaced a month ago. Replaced the thermostat housing which came with the new sponsor. Fan runs as soon as key is on and runs for10 min. After turned off. --- this is when starting cold! After a day of trying this and that with no different results I, I put in the old sensor with the same results? I'm out of solutions. Could it be a defective sensor? What else could it be?

0117 to 0118

I had a very similar issue although mine was a little bit more odd.
I had to install a thermostat housing because of a leak coming from heater hose. In the process I ended up breaking my crossover pipe so I had to replace that as well. When I had everything put back together it started throwing p0117 code. So I took the new sensor out of the thermostat housing and I put the old sensor back in. Now it's reading p0118.
The P0117 suggested the temperature was below 40゚, the 0118 suggests the cars running at 286゚. A possible solution, replace the connector that attaches to the sensor. I have a 2007 R56 And it seems like just about every piece of plastic in this car falls apart the 2nd you touch it.

Found the green wire had broken at connector. Replaced wire loom $20usd and fixed the open connection. Started having issue after fixing leak at thermostat area and replaced housing. Symptoms fan ran all the time when vehical was running and extended time when turned off. Would throw a P0118 every reset of ecm.
