2009 Service Interval on speedo-how does it work?
Hey guys n' gals,
Multiple MINI owner here. Have had a Classic 1987 Austin Mini for 7 or 8 years. REcently bought my wife a 2012 Knightsbridge SE, but this question is about my 2009, which I've only driven about 9 or 10 times.
When I first turn the car on, the tach says :
"16,000kms"
"July 9,2013"
(might not exactly be that specific date, but you get the point)
My question is, even though I've owned the car a few weeks now, the
"16,000kms" number never changes.. . . .I presume this is to remind me when to go get the oil changed, but shouldn't it be counting up ? (or down?)
We're pretty new to MINIs (but not classic Minis) so I apologize for the weird and obviously newbie question.
I have a book enroute from the dealer for the 09 "new-to-me" car.
TIA !

It should start counting down (unless it makes an upward adjustment for driving style). On US cars, it only changes roughly every 1,000 miles, so I'd guess every 1,000 km for you. It is not exact as it is constantly making adjustments.
Ahhhh, I see. Well, I just gassed the car up an hour or so ago for the first time since owning it. About 840kms...(521 miles) so likely I haven't reached the first hurdle. I am getting excited over nothing.
I did a search online and with some scribbles on paper went out to the car and was able to scroll through some service menus.
I think the 16,000kms I am seeing corresponds to an icon for front brakes.
So, I have a second question (I guess?)....can you have the default "mileage marker" for when you start the car sitting on oil change or something else?
Does the car decide that based on which one is due first?
OK, enough questions.
Gotta go out to the garage and work on a carb, points and timing on my 87 ;-)

I thought the 16,000km was the mileage that the service needs to be performed, not how many miles remain until the service needs to be performed.
My Volkswagen does it the count down way, but my MINI hasn't changed.

Well, I can't say for sure, as I am a MINI newbie (as it were), but the car has 58,000kms on it, so I don't think it's waiting to make it to the 16,000kms mark, LOL ! (long since past)
Could the car have not been serviced by a MINI dealer and as such not had the service minder reset?

It is a countdown system in the MINI. It takes a while to change when it is still a large number of miles until the service is due. Almost like the fuel gauge, it is not really linear from what I can tell.
