R56 Fuel Consumption (MPG) Correction Procedure
Fuel Consumption (MPG) Correction Procedure
This procedure is to be used to make adjustments to a second generation MINI, 2007-2012, MPG computer. Typically many owners find their On-Board Computer (OBC) readings are very optimistic in that they indicate a mpg rate that is higher than that calculated the old school way with miles traveled divided by gallons consumed.
Here is what you can do to change the default factor in the system. Please use this at your own risk since unknown issues may occur when entering this procedure. If your MPG reading is too high, you'll need to determine what percent too high it is. Example: if your car reads 33mpg and, via an old school calculation, you are confident the car is truly getting 30mpg on average, you need to have the OBC reduce its readings by 9.09%. This is obtained by dividing the difference between the two values by the value the computer indicated: 3/33=9.09%, not 10% as you may have assumed. Anyway, you'll probably want to make an initial correction then go back in a month or two later and tweak it a bit.
So, when you get into the OBC, you'll probably find that the factor default setting from the factory is 1000. If you want to change it per the above example and reduce the indicated readings by 9.09%, you will change the factor to 1091. Similarly, if your car was actually underreporting MPG, which is highly unlikely, then you'll need to enter a factor of less than 1000. If you are looking to increase the MPG by 9.09% the factor would become 909(1000-9.09%=909).
Procedure:
1. Turn on power to dashboard and instruments. I have comfort access in my MINI so I press the start button one time, with key in pocket. Be aware that power to the instruments will time out after a couple minutes and you'll need to start over, if you are in the middle of it.
2. Press trip odometer RESET button and hold for 10 sec. As soon as the digital display in your tach changes, immediately release the button.
3. Wait a couple seconds and the display will show 01.- -
4. When you see that, press the RESET repeatedly until you step to 19.- -. Wait a few seconds and the OBC will change to 19.00 allowing you to enter your unlock code. This is the step where you will unlock the access to the Fuel Consumption factor.
5. Enter the unlock value which is the sum of the last 5 digits of your VIN. This will be a two digit number and the system limits your options. After entering you sum, press RESET. Display should read LOCK OFF. Press RESET and hold for a few seconds to move out of 19.00 to 19.- -. When you get this display you are ready to go to the next step
6. From the display indicating 19.- - , press the RESET button one time to get you to Test 20.- - . Wait a few seconds and OBC will enter into Test 20.00 and a factor will be shown - probably 1000, if no one has touched it previously. To change the factor, you press the RESET button one time and it triggers a roll through of the 4 digits starting with the ones digit. It will scroll through and when you see the value you want, immediately press and release the reset button. This moves the scroll to the tens digit. Repeat the same procedure through all 4 digits. After you have selected the last digit, the scrolling will stop. If you don't get it right, don't panic, just relax and let it scroll through again. From there you press and hold the RESET button for several seconds to get you to a display of 20.- -.
7. Then press the RESET to get past Test 20 and you may then shut off the ignition
8. I would go through the entire procedure one more time to ensure that the value you entered is really in there. Its quite easy to get it wrong.
9. Manually check your MPG for the next 5 tanks of gas at a minimum and write down the OBC MPG vs your calculation for each full tank.

Good luck and please advise if you find I got any details wrong and I will edit the post.

Thanks for posting this BlackMagicMini.
I was in the same situation as warewolf, I was in the hidden service menu and stopped on no.20. The values start changing before you know what is going on. I set it on 700 as a guess and I was getting plug in-hybrid gas mileage. I next went as high as it would go, 1299, and that didn't work. I'll try the 1000 plus add my percentage and report back latter.

How much correction are you needing? On mine I entered 1050 for a 5% decrease which should take the mpg down by about 1.5mpg. I'll watch it for a few more tanks and see if it needs further tweeking. Another good thing with making these corrections is that the range to empty will be more accurate as well. Let us know how you do.
I'm going for 4.5%. With the five star spooler wheels on, the computer would say 44 mpg but the real mpg would be 42. I'm running a wider tire/wheel setup and lately the computer says any where from 42 to 40 mpg and the real mpg is 40 to 38. I'll try 1045 for now and move toward 1047 then 1050.
Thanks again
Thanks again
Update,
With consumption set at 1045 the computer was still reading about two miles per gallon over the actual consumption.
I went to 1047 and my results were better.
I filled up today, the computer said 41 MPG and the actual was 40.4 MPG.
I will run this tank at 1047 again and then move to 1050 and report back latter.
Sorry to take so long on this but it takes a while to use a tank of gas. This is a dead thread anyway, I'll post once more when I go to 1050.

sry for reviving this post but, i was researching this since quite sometime and i have some findings, i am going to give it a extended try but, this calculation seems to be the true one.
(your actual mpg / computer's calculation)*1000. so if your car overestimates your mpg, the factor has to be less than 1000. also this factor can be between 750 and 1250. so if you set it to 1299 it will reset itself to the last position before your last change.
like i said, i'll keep here updated. because there is not enough knowledge at internet about this and if you're into this hidden obc stuff, or your changed you injectors etc, you might wanna change this value.
-i saw this at some "bimmer" forum but, dunno it might be vice versa like blackmagicmini's explanation.
-actually, here
-some further research, blackmagicmini's calculation must be the correct one.

Actually, am glad you did actasci. I'm going to try it, would be nice for the mpg to be more accurate. Thinking about it, would be nice if this was a sticky..
