Fixing Run Flat tire!!

I got a nail in my brand new tire.
480 miles on the car and I had a nail in one!!

It wasn't bad enough I had to have the tire fixed but they charged me double the normal $25.

$50 to put a patch on it because it was a run flat!!

Anybody else have this problem??

It really made me mad!! It wasn't any more trouble and didn't take any longer why twice the price??

the only reason that they would have put a patch on it is if the nail had penetrated on the side wall or away from the belts(tread)of the tyre. I have repaired plenty of run flats with a plug on the tread of the tire. a patch does take longer but $50- is way too much, more like $30-

Buy a DynaPlug kit and keep it in the trunk for next time. That way you can patch it right away and avoid possible damage to the tire by driving on it flat (and avoid the repair cost).

$50 is pricey so I would chop it up to a lesson learned and avoid that shop next time you need to spend $500 on new tires.

wow. surprised they will even Patch a run flat! from what ive heard, they are not "supposed to", and the tire "cant handle it"... ect.

so, IMO, if you can get it patched, consider yourself lucky, instead of buy a whole nother tire

I recently punctured one of my run-flats as well. I've done my research and decided to abide by what the tire manufacture recommends - replace the tire. Except I'm replacing all of them with regular tires so I don't have to face this pricey decision again.

I believe the only reason they say that is that it may no longer work as a run flat but should still work fine. That said I am also a believer in ditching the run flats asap.

I've had numerous repairs made to run-flat tires going back to 2004. Done by a very reputable independent tire shop that handles Z-rated run-flats all the time and a stone's throw from a BMW/MINI dealer. They won't repair for nails near sidewalls but in the tread has been no problem for me. Technically, if it's a Z-rate tire you'd lose your Z rating on such a repair, but research what that means and you'll realize it's not really a problem you need to worry about. (Unless you drive 140 mph routinely.)

I think it is a liability issue. The problem is that when you have a flat tire the sidewall could be compromised and the tire shop has no idea how long you drove on that run-flat dewall. The reality is that if you had a slow leak or a screw in there the tire is not flat and can be plugged easily and still be safe.

You are right - Continental basically says that in their tire repair guide:

SSR TIRES: Even a trained tire specialist may be unable to recognize internal structural damage to a Self Supporting Runflat (SSR) tire resulting from having been driven in an under inflated or zero pressure condition. Such damage may not be visible on the surface of the inner liner or sidewall making it impossible to determine the tire suitability for repair or reuse. Continental does not recommend any repair to or reuse of Continental SSR tires.
I haven't driven with low pressure - I've been filing the tire up every time I use the car since it's a slow leak. My issue is the puncture is outside the repairable zone (closer to the sidewll). I'd probably have to replace the tire anyway, but switching to regular should keep my costs down in the future (and give me a smoother ride).

If you are complaining about paying $50 now, just wait until you have to buy a tire!

I have had to have repairs (patches) completed on run-flats twice. Two different tire shops - $30 each, so $50 seems high. Of course that may be the going rate in your are of the country. BTW, no issues with tires following the patch jobs. Beat's purchasing new tires. I plan to replace my RF's with regular tires, once I need to due to tread life wear. While I am not a RF fan, I don't see a reason to replace until the RF's are worn out.

$50 was almost half the price of a new tire!! With only 450 miles on the car I never even thought about ditching the run flats. But I know the difference ditching them on my '09 made all the differennce so I guess I should have considered doing it now and being done with them!!

The nail was right in the middle of the tire between the threads and I kept the tire filled so patching it really wasn't a problem it was just the price!!

you know if you ran the tire with no pressure but the tire store does not - simple enough

if you have a relationship with the shop you'll probably get the tire plugged or patched & if you are cold off the street . . .

as a previous post said - buy a DYNAPLUG and you'll quite possibly save yourself some money. In My Experiece I don't typically get a flat - I just find I have a nail or a screw in the tire and the pressure hasn't gone down a bit. Load the Dynaplug, yank the nail with pliers, insert the plug, cut off excess, check pressure and top off air as needed. easypeezie

Try a quarter of the price. The OEM runflats basically start at 200 and go up quickly. I would imagine that the OEM ones you have are about 250....

As others have said, you were lucky that they would even touch it as most places won't.

Me thinks you missed my point....

FYI, you would still have to buy at least two new tires as I don't know any tire shop that will put a regular tire on a car and leave three (I do know a place or two that will do two and two front to back but even these are rare) run flats so you are still looking at 200 plus installation and balance. Most would make you change all of them.

I did understand and I would have changed all 4 and probably will in the next six months.
but 4 installed are about $500 and the benefits and the driveablity will be well worth it. So to waste $50 just wasn't something I should have done!!

My point is that if you are worried about money you did the right thing. You spent 50 dollars and have the ability to wear those tires down getting your monies worth rather than dropping 500 so, you really didn't get my point as I said.

I'm done arguing, so enjoy your ride.
