Lights always on?

Hi. I'm new to the Minis and recently bought a 2010 JCW (so please forgive my ignorance).

Every time I turn on the car, the light turn on too (headlights, license plate, brake lights, etc.) The light switch only turns the dashboard gauges on. Is this normal? I feel kind of weird using my lights all the time.

I've never had a car with daylights before, so I really don't know if this is normal or not. I would prefer to change this to manual. Is it possible? If so, please explain how to.

Thanks!

Sounds like your daytime running lights are set to on. Have you read the manual, it tells you how to change setting like that. Its accessed through the set menu with the stalk button.

Yes, when you select daytime running lights the perimeter lights are on too. Still, I'd rather improve chances of being seen so I run mine.

Maybe somebody can answer my question here. I have tried both ways daylight running lights on and off. But as long as my switch is set to auto my exterior and interior lights are on. I do know that the windshield was replaced.

We switched on the headlight switch at the dealership and have not touched it since. They always come on, and always turn themselves off. Makes for safer driving. We also always run the front fogs, and have the rear fogs option. The bright red rear fogs are great to switch on for the occasional tailgater.

You may not have auto headlights. They may just be in the on position. When left in on position, they turn on and off with ignition.

I have 2 different positions on my switch. On is turned all the way clockwise. and auto is all the way counterclockwise. Well Actually I guess more positions including off and parking lights only.

That or check to make sure that you don't have the lights turned on. Becuase you can leave them on also.

If it is DTRL you can go into the OBC and turn it off.

But shouldn't the DRLs just run only the headlights....

at a lower output, and not the tail lamps or side markers? That's the way it was on my R53. I like to leave the switch in auto position (otherwise why have auto lamps) but when I do, all of the damn lights are on just as if the switch was in on position, regardless of the ambient lighting. The xenons are burning at 100%. I don't want all of the lights on in the light of day, just a lower intensity headlight, i.e. a "daytime running light". I don't see any way to get that to happen.
