Oil catch can questions

Hey everyone, this may be a stupid question, i know the benefits of a Oil catch can, But is it worth getting when my MCS already has 73000 miles on it? Will there be any benefits to it?

Depends, did you recently have a carbon build-up cleaning service done?
Are you noticing significant oil consumption?
Do you drive short trips very often or not allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature?

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes i had a carbon build-up service done about 1000 miles ago. I actually don't consume that much oil between changes, average of about 1/2 quart. Typically change oil every 3000-5000 miles. i drive on a normal day one way to work about 40 miles so the car is always at 220 degrees about half way there.

Installing a catch can (and passenger side PCV block) will reduce the oil vapor collection inside the intake manifold and reduce carbon build-up on the valves.

You're doing better than most with that; keep it help, that significantly helps.

Thank you very much for the information. I think i am going to go ahead and get the BSH Catch can from way motor works. I might also buy the alta foam cai. I have the k&n typhoon but it hits my strut bar. Any suggestions on that?

I've had the Alta unit on my '07MCS for several years now and it too rubbed on two different strut bars. What I did was take two 14" inch heavy duty plastic ties, joined to form one about 24", then wrapped them around the OEN fresh air pipe and the CAI supply pipe to the turbo and cinched them together, not a lot just enough to pull the CAI unit down, and it keeps it from moving so much. That cured the rubbing problem for me.
Have been happy with the Alta, but am thinking of moving to the DoS CAI unit

do you need a boost tap for the oil catch can install? seems like oil catch cans are so generic. I see ebay listing for $50-70.

anyone can confirm it can be installed without the boost tap? Thx

+1 on the catch can and boost tap.
Mine has 64,660 on it and runs great.
No issues with the can at all.
Oil changes are about every 6K.

I can be installed BUT it will not work as designed as the passenger PCV port is still letting the engine suck in oil vapor.

So you go buy the blocking plugs from Europe and plug those in and you are good to go.

Agree with Bluefox280. Probably one of the best upgrades you can do for your Mini. Yes, you should use the boost tap on the passenger side.
The ones on ebay, ????? Don't know what brand, etc. but I like the BSH plus it has baffles inside. Don't know if they all do or not.
Remember, you get what you pay for.

Regarding the mounting...where did you guys move that button/sense that senses the hood close????..it seems to be on the bracket where you would mount the catch can.

Pretty sure it's part of the security system.
I mounted my OCC just to the left of the bracket, next to the JCW CAI box, it was a snug fit but it works well.
Check out my photo's here>

Just installed my red billet oil catch on Saturday. Hoses are all installed, need to work on a permanent bracketing arrangement, right now its wire-tied temporarily to keep it from bouncing around too much. Got mine on ebay for $32, can is excellent quality but nothing except the mounting bracket was any good as far as accessory items, spent $20 at Advance Auto to get the 5/8 to 3/4 copper hose/pipe adapter (the adapter is copper, that is) and a bag of 6' heater hose - 3/4" and S/S aircraft hose clamps. Total install time about 1/2 hour, gonna be a bit more to figure out the bracketing. To a degree you do get what you pay for, obviously in this case all the money went into the can itself, which is fine with me, rather have a good can and just swap out the crap anciillary parts. Yes, I know the $200 ones have wire-mesh oil "fences" inside but I do have a limited budget and still need to do the FMIC. Can always upgrade later if I find that this thing is as effective as some other people are claiming. I am curious to see how much oil gets bypassed.

Got it from DoS, it is a bit pricey but it is very well made and matched the BSH OCC, and is made by BSH for DoS!
I had to bend the bracket a bit to change the angle to the top section since I mounted it on the firewall which angles back as it drops down. I took the drivers side cowling off to gain access to the bolts. The bolt and the threaded L bracket it threads into that actually join the two BSH brackets is a left over from a fiber optic long ago project!
Hope this helps!
