Did you change it when the computer told you to change it or did you change it when you wanted too? If the car is newer and still has the dealer paid oil changes you do not want to change the computer interval if it was not telling you to do so. Otherwise you will not get your free oil changes.

You should get an oil change at the dealer annually or within the 15k miles so that the dealer don't have a reason to void your warranty for not having any records of oil maintenance.

Like PatM said, it depends on whether you are still within the window of free maintenance or not. If you are still eligible for free oil changes from the dealer, you should not reset it. If you reset it, the computer will then extend your maintenance mileage back to ~15,000 miles, negating your ability to get your free oil change from the dealer.

If you are beyond the period of free maintenance, then feel free to reset it at will.

Interesting note, I paid my dealer to do an oil change at 3000 miles, and requested that they not reset the counter for the above reason. They said that since it's not a normally scheduled oil change that they weren't allowed to reset it even if I had wanted them to.

Cheers
Jon

If it is reset you can lose the free oil change. I had the same thing at 9000 miles. Now at 14775 getting close to free oil change. They will not reset it.

You could do a search for "R56 service reset" or something similar and you should find the instructions posted by TWISTER. I have since found a second method for resetting the indicators that I prefer as it does not reset my trip odometer. I put the instructions together in this document (sorry, not fully documented as to sources - thanks to all who figured this stuff out).

I've been having a running email discussion with our dealer. I've changed the oil twice in the first 15,000 miles - 3000 and 13,000. I live 3 hours from the closest dealer so the free oil changes aren't worth the drive - but a warranty for a new engine certainly is!

The dealer said to keep my receipts and hope for the best. I've got to reset the service indicator or it will look like I didn't do any service. What's the deal with the key fob somehow remembering the service history?

The key fob keeps the history of your engine. I think it may include any service indicators an engine malfunction codes. I don't know for certain all of the data that it captures from the ECM.
