R56 Problems with 2012 Models?
Water temperature sensor replacement
Apparently this fix is being done on 2011 MINI's also. I took my 2011 MC (Justa) with a manual transmission in for a coolant leak. I have a ScanGauge and noticed the maximum water temperatures had dropped to around 200F from 220F when the car was new. I told the service manager about this change and he said the water temperature sensors were being replaced. I mentioned that I had not received any notification about a recall. The dealer said that they were just starting to send out notices. I don't know if this is considered a recall, but my dealer installed the new sensor when they fixed the water leak at no cost. The water temperature is now staying around 220F like when the car was new.

Clubman S comfort access key fob does not start car with push button at 14K. Spent 4 nights at the dealer with many parts replaced. Worked correctly for 2 days and now car does not start with push button unless key is in the slot. I am worried this is a deep problem that may not be resolved. Any thoughts?

comfort access key fobs use non-recharging batteries
non-comfort access key fobs use batteries that recharge while plugged into the car

cjm,
I have been reading all the posts you made regarding the fan noise in the new MINI. I asked several questions about the change from my 2007 MCS because of similiar concerns. The fan noise was almost non existent in the 2007 MCS and when it came on it was not very loud. The fan in my 2011 MC appears to be only a single speed fan and is much louder than the low speed fan was on my 2007 MCS. I never heard the high speed fan on the MCS. I live in the South and temperatures in the summer can get into the 90's with high humity so I use the air conditioning quite often. Without the air conditioning, I never hear the fan because I don't do much stop and go driving. If the air conditioning is off, the fan does not come on after I turn off the engine. If the air condition is on, the fan will come on and seems to stay on. The fan was coming on after using the A/C and shutting off the engine. I had the coolant tensor sensor changed with the recall and the fan has not come on after shutting off the engine since that change. My MCS had automatic climate control and my MC does not. I let the climate control do everything in my MCS. I just set the temperature where I wanted it and let the climate control do the rest. I only heard the low speed fan come on ocassionaly after the engine was shut off and didn't notice it while running. The low speed fan may have been on all the time the A/C was running on my MCS. On my MC the fan seems to come on and stay on anytime the A/C is running. I have tried changing temperature setting with the A/C on and that does not seem to make any difference. I think the change from a two speed fan to a single speed fan is the problem. The single speed fan needs to be strong enough for the worst case. With the dual speed fan, the low speed handles everything but the worst case. If you find a way to eliminate the fan noise, please share it with everyone.

My 2012 R56 has 2300 miles on it, no problems that are attributable to the stock car, I do have one issue but it is strictly due to the after market items i installed(sprint booster, ECS add on module, and defenders of speed CAI) I have learned how to avoid the problem(which is; if the throttle is floored at wrong RPM engine goes into "limp home mode") No big deal, to correct, pull over, shut off engine and restart. so i don't floor it at that RPM, problem solved!
Mini has extended the warranty to 4 years 50k miles, any major issues will show up in that time. IF YOU ORDERED THE R56 "S", BE AWARE THE THE HEAT FROM THE TURBO CAN WARP THE HOOD SCOOP, there are companies out there, such as M7 that sell shields for the turbo that solve that problem.
Since mine is a lease car, as far as i am concerned it is trouble free.

Chipped and bubbling paint
I bought my 2012 MC in April of this year. Approximately 2 months after I received the car I noticed some bubbling and chipping of the paint around the front right foglight housing. I took it back to my dealer and after jumping through a few hoops, MINI Canada agreed that it was a fault in the original paint and agreed to fix it. Great. The problem was that they do not supply a loaner for the time the dealer had the car and they wouldn't cover the cost of a rental.
I complained to the dealer several times and moved up the chain each time. Finally, they agreed to give me a loaner of which I was grateful for.
If I had to pay out of pocket for the paint fix, it would have cost me over $800. as they had the car for 16 days. $800 out of pocket for a warranty issue???
I called MINI Canada several times about this but I received the same answer each time. They really should review their policy on this. The dealer told me that if it was mechanical there wouldn't have been a problem but when it comes to paint and body work, that's another story.
If anyone can shed any light on this or has a similar story I'd love to hear about it.

Big problems with my 2012....
I, too, am having problems with my mini non-s 6 speed manual... At 1220 miles, the water pump began failing, and within 12 hours, the check engine light came on. The dealership replaced the the water pump and the spark plugs, as theynsaid that they had fouled. Now, at 2700 miles, I have another failing water pump, with, surprise surprise, the check engine light coming on within 24 hours. Now, I am being told that the water pump has failed again, as well as the fuel injectors and ignition coil. Plus the dealership is still looking for other issues.... Is this a computer problem, perhaps or a "lemon" problem.....need some advice....thanks
Hi byron h.
Just noticed your post (I only seem to be notified occasionally)
My '12 N18 MCS hatch has a 2-speed fan; I thought all MINIs do. Yes, your loud fan might come on occasionally if it's your only fan but you must have more than 1 fan speed, surely. The low speed's always on with a/c, I gather, and I never hear it. We all hear the high speed fan when it comes on, definitely!
(Mine worked fine after a couple of thermostat and/or sensor changes over 4 visits but the 5th visit for new 'enhancements' to the coolant sensor seems to have permanently fixed the continuous loud engine fan running issue, thank goodness...I never hear it now, even after switching off. Can't share any more than that.)

cjm,
Thanks for responding. I made the following post before getting a Bentley manual. That post gives some of the reasons why I believe the coolant fan is a single speed on my 2011 MC. The wiring diagrams in the Bently manual shows only two wires going to the coolant fan. The MCS or MCS with automatic temperature control may have two speed fans. The water temperature switch update only eliminated the fan running on after shutdown on my MINI. The fan comes on and is loud anytime the air conditioning is on and the motor is running at any coolant temperature. It also doesn't matter if I have the A/C temperature control at the warmest or coldest setting.

Wow, you've certainly done your research!
Your info seems to ring a bell about a post here on NAM: A Gen1 owner saw the by-pass of his low speed fan circuit as a solution to his blowing l.s fan resistor probs. I think he reasoned that any overheating probs would be dealt with by the h.s fan which could be fully relied upon w/out being compromised by the l.s fan fault.
Perhaps MINI took a leaf out of his book...A pity they can't make that h.s fan noise a lot less stressful on the driver!
ps: Is it too late to put a Bentley manual on my list to Santa Claus?

Broken windshield......arg!
Fan running on fixed. Under warranty.
Broken passenger interior door release cable replaced under warranty.
Went in for a 15,000 mile oil change and because the computer said I still had 4200 miles to go for oil change there was a "discussion".
20,000 mile oil change CBS service? Eventually, dealer agreed to do the oil change under warranty. Why was this so hard? Sure, I do the 5K changes myself but I'm trying to make sure there is documentation of warranty service. I'm not convinced there isn't issues with the Mini's computer. This is a heavy technology car.

Glad to see you are changing the oil yourself. I do the same thing along with the dealer oil change.
Manufacture date may be impacting whether he received the software patch that lowers the interval. fwiw, even though my software was flashed in June, I still received a 15k interval when I reset it last week. Of course, mine typically stayed at 20k for the interval.
Something seems to be wrong with your oil change interval according to this post:

I guess that makes the BMW/Mini corporate guys happier.
The cut off date for the oil service change(from 15K to 10K) was end of March I believe, so my car was built(born) before that and doesn't get the 10K change interval. Funny how that works with cars built in the same year!

my dad's 09/2011 built cms all4 was 15,000 until his first dealer oil change at 1 year, then it came out at 8,000 miles til next change and the SA said that was the new interval
my 03/2012 originally was set for 9,000 miles and also came out after the first dealer change set to 8,000 miles
neither car has been reflashed

Byron H, I also have a 2011 MC, and have only had the high speed fan come on once. I don't have climate control. The one time that it came on, was in a desert run with an event, where the desert was over 100 degrees and we went 'spiritedly' up a mountain, following turbo charged MINIs, with my hubby and I. We also had to run the a/c a little bit, though we turned it off as much as we could stand. When we parked at the top of the mountain, my car had a loud fan running for about 15 minutes. Now I know that I should have turned the car back on and let it idle... now they tell me! (rolls eyes) Anyway, she has never had that fan come on again, but it was definitely louder then the regular fan... you could hear it from twenty feet away!
i believe the dealers can reset the next due oil/filter miles to a different number without a reflash

To have as policy that cars built before March of the same model year(2012) should be treated differently is incomprehensible. It has all the makings of a "class action lawsuit".
Next oil change is showing 14K. So it's still a mystery to me what Mini is doing with 2012 cars before the oil service change policy. It appears I'm still set at 15K for an oil change(.14K+16K=30K) But of course I'll change it myself at the halfway point.

Coolant Fan noise
JoanieB,
Thanks for the input on the Justa cooling fan noise. The loudness of the fan is a very subjective thing. If I had not owned a MCS or had the coolant temperature sensor problem, I would not have thought there was a cooling fan problem. My MCS never had a fan noise as loud as I hear in my MC. I would only hear the fan in my MCS after I shut down the engine on the hottest days. With the engine running, I could not hear the fan over the engine noise. This was like all the other cars I have owned. When my coolant temperature sensor stopped working correctly, the coolant fan ran in the default mode and would run a few minutes after shutting down. Since the fan in my MC is louder than the fan was in my MCS, I assumed that it was running at high speed and was concerned that I had a problem. I had the dealer listen to the fan noise and was told that it was normal. I still was'nt convinced, so I asked to hear another 2011 MC run with the A/C on. They started the engine on a 2011 MC they had on their lot and turned on the A/C. The coolant fan came on and sounded as loud as in my MC. I was still concerned because the coolant fan was running for a few minutes after I shut the engine down any time I had the A/C on. The dealer checked the engine temperature sensor and found that it needed to be replaced. After the engine temperature sensor was replaced the coolant fan has not come on after shutting down the engine regardless of whether the A/C was on or off. Even though I can hear the fan over the engine noise when the car is running, I have to be outside the car to hear it. I am convinced that the fan is a single speed for the reasons I gave in the preceding post.

I guess its time for me to update this thread with my experience.
My car is now on its 2nd water pump.
Original lasted till 400 miles when the bearing went (it would whistle)
Then at 17500 miles there was a coolant leak traiced back to the water pump.
So the pump was replaced.
Otherwise my car has been great!

I picked up mine in April 2012 and I have about 21k on it right now. I have had 2 problems with the car so far. Overall I love the car and problems are minimal.
1. The right rear speaker sometimes flutters with low end bass. Mini checked it with a test CD they have and couldn't recreate but I have seen others complain when I did a google search.
2. 3 times now the satellite radio won't change channels. When I attempt to change, it says "acquiring" and then switches back to the current channel. The car must be shut down and started again to correct the issue. The dealer documented this as a known issue but didn't have a fix at this time.
3. I know I said I had 2 issues, but the 3rd is the OEM floor mats. They absolutely suck and start to curl up on the corners, they never stay put, and the velcro tears off. Do yourselves a favor and get the all weather mats, I love them.

22k on Betty and no significant problems just expected nuances. Everything has been great. Would I do it again you bet I would. We are looking forward to ordering our second MINI (this time a Roadster) in about 6 months.
At 6800 miles (6 months since purchase) and everything fine until today when check engine light came on. I restarted car, checked the obvious (gas cap) but still have it. Seems to be running ok so guess I take a day off work and drive 70 miles to the dealer later this week. Never had this problem with my '07 so hope this is a one-time occurence.
