Is new coolant fan a single speed?
Is new coolant fan a single speed?
I recently traded in a 2007 MCS for a new 2011 MC. The coolant fan on the 2011 MC runs much more frequently and is louder than the one on the 2007 MCS. I questioned the dealer if this was normal. The dealer said the lounder sound was normal and that the more frequent operation was also normal. I was told that the coolant fan was activated by A/C condenser temperature or by coolant temperature. If the A/C is on a high setting it will start the coolant fan even if the coolant is not hot. While I was at the dealership, I started another new 2011 MC and set the A/C on its highest setting. The coolant fan came on almost immediately and sounded as loud as mine. I found that the coolant fans for the 2011 MC's are made by Bosch. Bosch's website showed that they make single speed and two speed coolant fans. Their website also gives the wiring diagrams for single speed and two speed fans. The wiring diagrams show that the single speed fans use a two prong connection and the two speed fans a three prong connection. My 2011 MC uses a two prong connector. It appears that MINI might be using a single speed fan to solve the problem they were having with the low speed fan resistors failing.
