Also forgot to mention the AUX jack was defected, had to wiggle the cable around for all speakers to work even then any light movement on the cable will knock out the sounds. Its been replaced and now works perfect...now for the freekin rattle. Also had the passenger window replaced because the glass was defected with bumps like the glass was shaven down evenly...the tint guys wouldnt give me their lifetime warranty because of the defect. Replaced with no issues now....except for the rattling.

 

oh yeah, 2012 Clubman S with upgraded harmon, 300 miles.

'12 R56 LCI MCS. Thermostat being replaced today at 1600mls.
Symptoms: Engine fan always on after ~10mls. Stays on 30s after switch-off.
Using an OBDII I found temp was always constant @ 220 - 225F (this value made me realise how much better informed NAM is) + the fan seemed to be disconnected from anything temperature related in that it didn't affect any temp readings when activated. Initially dealer said it's a 'characteristic' but made an appointment for me when I informed him that this particular characteristic passed me by on my two previous R56 MCS'...

I also had a problem with a really loose AUX port, they finally fixed it, no problems now.

 

Hi CJM, Ive never had a mini before and thought the fan that comes on after engine is off is normal? If its not please let me know...I might need to bring it back for that too.

 

It's totally normal unless it's running for a long time.

The thermostat was replaced by the dealer earlier today... Um, symptoms persist; fan came on towards the end of the 20ml trip home and lasted 13s (this time) after switching off.
No real solution; I'm still not happy with the fan coming on while the car's in motion (or when switched off for that matter).
My 3rd R56 MCS and it's never happened before.
(All this in the cool UK Spring; how would fare in your USA temperatures?)

 

cjm, you are concerned that your fan was on for 13 seconds after shutting the car off? This has been normal on both Mini's I've owned.

It didn't happen with the two r56 mcs' I had before this one so I'm not used to it. Other cars don't seem to do it as much, or you can't hear them...
I'm not happy that this fan's coming on (and staying on) while the car's being driven; to me this is the final protection from over-heating / engine seizure.
(In this way it violates my comfort zone.)
Finally, it's so noisy, calamitous and unnecessary; rather like pulling up at traffic lights and a wheel or a door falls off. It doesn't add to the enjoyment of the car at all.

 

Get a ScanGauge and watch the engine temperature. When thermostat was replaced it lowered the engine temperature by 10 deg and the fan hardly comes on now.

 

Hi Eddie07S. Yes, I have an OBDII tool that I attached via the gf's netbook. It's what made me realise that the fan + thermostat weren't 'talking' properly. I haven't rigged it up since the new thermostat (2 days ago) but already I feel the fan seems to activate less often and seems less 'frantic' when it does.

According to NAM colleagues 220 - 225deg F seems normal for an R56 MCS. Mine was right at the top of this range. A BMW tech. here in the UK thought 'most cars' should be around 210degF ('high 90s celsius') but didn't know specifically about MINI. I think your 10 degF reduction sounds good for me! It would be interesting to verify these values if colleagues could post some more readings; there might well seem to be temperature anomalies evolving with the N18 variation...

Anyway, it's early days and I hope it'll settle down further.

Took delivery in October, thermostat was replaced at about 7500 miles. Ran like a slug, fuel economy tanked, and the fan would run nearly constantly while driving and for 30+ seconds after I shut the car off (this was in January mind you, ambient was rarely about 40F). Finally got a CEL after about 2 days of these symptoms and the dealer replaced with no complaints under warranty. Seems to have been fine in about 7k miles since then.

Other than that, its been working fine, and she does not have an easy life as an autocross car.

Does this mean that now you have no fan whilst driving and no fan after switching off (?) 'cos this is what I'd expect based on my two previous R56 MCS' in the (much cooler) UK climate.
I still have the opinion that this fan should only come on after many hours driving on a really hot day in the Summer!

 

I wish more people would chime in on the fan thing. I've used the search function regarding this, because I was once curious, and it appeared to me that it was normal for it run a bit after the car is off. But, sh*t, maybe I need to take mine in before my warranty ends? I live in Texas and it's already 90F; however, I'm not overheating.

 

It rarely ran the fan in the winter, but now that the thermometers are tipping past 80 more regularly I hear it come on in traffic sometimes. On the highway or normal driving I don't think I ever hear it but I also don't run the AC often. Only a few autocross runs will kick it on awhile while off in grid, but its by nature very hard on the cooling system since the speeds are so low. I don't think I've ever had it on when shut off after a normal drive, because that was the first thing that tipped me off that something wasn't right.

 

muzak. Neither of my (08/09) R56 (N14) MCS' did this, even in 80's weather here in UK, so if I had your fJCW here I'd check warmed up temps. (210 - 225F seems the consensus here on NAM) using my OBDII reader.

I arranged to meet the service agent with the engine running and the fan spinning like fury and logged the journey temp (225F). That was enough for him!

I take your point; nobody seems to feel certain enough to post about it in UK, either...the N18 engine's so new, I suppose, and they're waiting for it to 'settle down' as I was advised

I'd be happy with no cooling fan application unless the weather was searing + I'd just stolen my own car! Then perhaps 30sec or so. Otherwise I feel it's hot enough to cause damage to the engine. It's a Peugeot THP unit, isn't it. I might ring a dealer + ask if they've seen cooling issues too.

 

archdukeferdinand. I think you've defined the 'normal' that I was hoping for. Thanks for that! I hope my N18 MCS can get there, too.
Let's hope a few more people can comment on theirs.
(I'd be especially interested in the R56 N18s myself, though...And all you people with OBD/Scangauge temp. data, please share...)

I rode to work today with my sister-in-law and she has a 2012 S with 2,200 miles and the fan comes on after turning the car off for her too. This was after an 8 mile drive and the temps this morning were around 80F. More evidence for this being normal?

 

We pick up our 2012 MCS back in April and I noticed the fan stay on after I turn off the ignition. Called my dealer right away and they said it's normal . No CEL ever came on.

I'm now beginning to live with the fan staying on for ~15s after switching off as the temp 'spikes'; it's better than before but my fan still comes on during normal motoring after ~10miles and stays on... This is causing concern!

Do your fans come on (furiously) before turning the ignition off and stay on for the duration of the journey? (Warming up here in the UK 19celsius / 66F and my fan's doing this??)

 

That's what I wanted to check next -- is my fan coming on during the drive and/or before turning the ignition off, or is it kicking on right after turning the ignition off to cool the turbo & engine? I'm not sure yet, but next time I drive the car I'll check. Can't say that I've ever noticed the fan while the car is running, but never listened for it and my resonator is removed, thus the exhaust note, while not loud, is very audible. I did count 45 seconds of run time for my fan after a 10~ mile drive, all highway, in pretty hot weather, 90-95F. Water temps sit right around 106 Celsius, so I'm not overheating. My car does reach operating temps rather quickly, however. Not sure if that's an indication to anything.

 

muzak, your observation (and others) of fan running, or not, whilst driving would be really useful to me.
(Plus any temp. measurements when warmed up.)
