Good Day Everyone,
3 weeks ago I bought a 2007 MCS with 36k miles and the CPO warrenty. I am the 3rd owner. The first week it was in the shop for cold start issue. Not the HPF it was a bad temp sensor telling the cold motor it was fully warmed up. So day 3 after getting it back on my way home from work it made a loud "BANG" and kicked out of 3rd gear. It shifted back in ok but started whining. Jump ahead one week. Long story short today I got a call from the dealer that they were making thier case to MINI to get the trans replaced under warrenty.
Now to the question;
Should I have them replace the clutch $300 + 1 hour labor?
They also mentioned replacing the flywheel for $1100?
I'm new to the Mini but cant it be resurfaced?
They also said that a standard out of warrenty clutch cost @ $4500
do they use gold bars for friction pucks?

Wow, Spec clutches for my Challenger aren't even 2k. I think they are quoting you for the entire transmission and not the clutch (a MCS transmission is about 4500-4700). Surely ...
A flywheel is $1k. Depending on the damage, they can be, but generally you don't want to resurface them if they are cracked or have large dimples.

Absolutely replace the clutch. Almost all of the $$ in that job is getting to the thing, and it will be right there once they take the transmission out. You might even see if they'll drop the labor charge down more, but I'm not aware of what exactly is involved in replacing a MINI clutch.
New flywheel? I'm thinking only if it needs to be replaced, if it is too thin to turn. I would assume that the flywheel can be turned, but it is just an assumption.

I wouldnt have any reason to suspect there were issues with the fly wheel but they made it sound as though it was a standard part of a clutch job. Dowel pins, clutch and flywheel yet made no mention of a pressure plate. Should hear from the Dealer tomorrow with the final word.

I just recently (4 weeks ago) purchased an 07 MCS as well though with fewer miles. If this happened to me and I was given the choices, I would jump on the chance to replace the clutch for under $500 which sounds like that is their offer. I would however convince them that the extra labor is negligible in comparison of the rest of the job (since they charge what, $120/hr thats a considerable portion alone of that discounted price).
I can't speak of the flywheel but when my clutch went on my 2004 Nissan Altima (in 2007...eeek) it took the flywheel with it and total with replacing the clutch & flywheel and labor it cost me $1500 and the shop told me it was expensive at that point due to there only being OEM parts available. Seems like that isn't the case for us so I'd expect cheaper but others on the forums here have shown quotes at $4,000 (which is nuts) but most of my quick research showed 1.5k to 2k.
So, yes I would do it if I were in your shoes no question about it. I'd probably skip the flywheel unless I could talk them down on price (that's really expensive...kinda nuts and afaik that isn't a common replacement).

MINI is replacing the trans under warrenty! I am having the clutch replaced for just under $400. Should get it back Wednesday or Thursday. Should the transmission oil be changed after "X" miles of break in?

So the dealership called and said that the flywheel has "hot spots" and needs to bee replaced along with the clutch. So I'm in it for $1400. The car will be done Late friday or saturday. I have had the car for under a month and will have spent close to $2k in repairs not covered by the CPO warrenty and have driven it for less than 2 weeks BUT the bill would have been $1400 PLUS a new transmissio, temperature sensor and high pressure fuel pump. Lessons learned - Get the extended warrenty. Even if its clean with low miles doesnt mean they were easy miles.
I'm hoping that the rough start will make for a smooth road ahead.
