Lost key fob

So my wife lost her key to our MCS. ARGH! I've heard they are not cheap to replace. I'm dreading calling my dealer tomorrow. Anyone else lose theirs? I really don't want to rely on only having one key.

Should be around $250-300 for the key, possibly programming. Comfort Access or regular?

tell her to remember the last place she used them.

They either have to be in your home because they were with her the very last time she drove the car or they may be in her coat pocket or the last purse she used.

Go try to lock your car with your fob. If hers is in the car the door won't lock. If the door locks the missing fob is not in the car.

$300.00 including programming is what it will cost to replace the missing fob.

I don't have comfort access. My dealer told me $250 plus tax. .... It's not in the car. She thinks she may have accidentally thrown it out when she threw out her old purse. She thought she cleaned it all out, but she kept the MINI key in a pocket that she may have forgotten to check. She only drives it occassionally, so the last time she did was about a month ago. It looks like that key is long gone. Women, sheesh. (Just kidding).

I was quoted $212 plus tax from the dealer if no additional programming was needed (and 95% of the keys didn't need programming). The dealer also needed 3-5 days to get the key.

I recently bought my 2006 MCS and only received one key. The problem is that I don't have the title as it's at the bank. I've read several posts here where people have said that you need a copy of the title for the dealership to order your replacement key. So, How does one get a second key without a copy of the title? Maybe I can get the bank to send me a copy of the title but I'm not sure if the stealership will accept this as proof that I actually own the car. What do you guys think? Hawk

Check with your dealer there is a BIG difference between Gen 1 Keys and Gen 2 Fobs. Also i would think that most dealers would take a registration in your name if you tell them that the bank has the title as colateral for the loan. That is very common.

I son't know about other states, but in Maryland, even if you have a loan, you get a title. It's a different color and has the lien holder listed on it. Once you pay off the loan, you get a clear title.

Anyway, a dealer doesn't care if you have a title, if the car is registered to you, they will take your money...lol

when I needed a replacement key fob (not comfort) for my 07 (cuz one broke) I needed to provide a coy of the REGISTRATION and drivers license in same name - not the title

When the key arrived no programming was required - according to the service person at the time: if the key fob had never been associated with a vehicle then it would link the first time with no extra programming. However if the key HAD been used in another vehicle, programming would be required. A new key still in the bag associated with the car the first time it was put in the ignition.

I've no idea of the cost, it was a warranty issue.

^^^2nd that one. Money speaks.
When I bought my 07 it only had 1 key fob and at the replacement price for a spare, I think not. I've had 2 keys to my 1999 Mazda PU since new and have never lost a key. "knock on wood"

There are a few things I do not like about my MINI but the one I dislike the most is the key fob. I would far rather have a regular key.

dealer requirements to order 2nd key fob

For the dealer to order a 2nd key, a few things are necessary:
  1. the registered owner must be present to pre-purchase the key and to pick-up the key
  2. the registration of the vehicle
  3. the drivers license of the owner

my brother hide my keys in the house one day when i walked out to the car and noticed they werent there. i called him up and made him throw my keys down. like the *** he is, he chucked them and went into the sewer. My local dealer charge HIM $320 all said and done. This is also when i learned how much information is actually kept in those keys.

Id try and locate it before buying a new one. This is also why mini offers insurance on your car keys --____-- smh
