Start up problem?

I have a 2009 MINI Cooper S with just over 21,000 miles and an automatic/CVT transmission. I went to start it up just now and when I pushed the start button, it turned on, then the revs dipped below 1,000 RPM and the car stuttered for a second (almost as if you were about to stall a manual car) then jumped back up to normal RPMs. Is there something wrong?

Thanks in advance,
-G.B.

This could be carbon build up in the intake manifold. If so, needs to be cleaned out at the dealer with a cost of about 600.00 that is usually not covered under warranty or servicing.

The MCS does not have the CVT transmission, just an FYI. It was only present in the 2002-2006 Non-S Cooper. I believe all the MCS have the Aisin auto trans.

Not sure whether this is carbon, or something else. It could be a variety of things, such as a vacuum leak. I wouldn't worry about it unless it happens again.

I'd try a Seafoam treatment before spending $600 with the dealer. Seafoam seems to work well if the build-up hasn't gone too far. I did it at 17,000 miles and it made a difference in engine response.

I just picked up a 2010 MCS, It had 13 miles on it, The next day after picking up the car did this. It started up with no problems on the third try. Then it did the same a week ago... this time it wouldnt start up unless i pressed the button and then pressed the gas pedal.. then it was fine... I brought it to the dealer and left it there for 3 days, but they were unable to duplicate it or find any codes. I then picked up the car and have been driving it since.. it has yet to return!!!!!!! ughhh..

My new 2011 MCS does the same thing once in a while when I first start it in the morning. It's fine for the rest of the day. I thought it was just "normal" behaviour. With only 500 miles on it, I doubt it's carbon buildup but I'll keep an eye on it and take it in if it gets worse.

Good luck with yours !
