Oil Pan Gasket

Hi,
I have a leak in the oil pan gasket.
2007 Justa.

I was thinking of fixing this myself.
It's been my experience to change the gasket only you
usually don't have to jack the engine. Just lower the pan
enough to clean it all off and put the new gasket on.

Is there anything I should know? Torque settings of the bolts?
Do you use any goop on it? All over? Just the corners, etc?

Thanks!

condor27596,

This is from the BMW/MINI TIS CD....

Remove bolts on oil pan, Loosen the Exhaust Manifold from Tail Pipe, Clean sealing surface, DO NOT USE ADHEASIVE SEALING BEAD, and again it says DO NOT USE LIQUID SEAL but use " A Metal Substrate Gasket is available for repairs".

Tightening Torque is 12Nm for oil pan bolts for R56 N12 Engine non S.

If you can get the MINI repair CD there is alot of good info on it.

I hope that helps.

now using silicon seal?

ok, not trying to dig up a 3 year old thread, however this thread does turn up when you search google for how to replace an r56 oil pan/gasket, so I wanted to post/comment that REALOEM (and a few other sites) states that mini no longer uses a gasket for this but does use a silicon sealant. Which also contradicts what is in my Bentley.

I'm going to Mini next week to pick up parts for this job and will update this post then.

MINI has started using the sealant tube for the Oil pan gasket a little while ago. You can still get the previous pan gasket from other sources.

Thanks

is one method preferred over the other?

I just got the tube of goop, but if that gasket is preferred i'd rather do that...then again, the gasket is probably whats on there now and has failed...

Gen 1 pan is different (cast aluminum) and would need a gasket. Gen 2 cars have a stamped metal pan and only need liquid sealer.

MINI has gone to the sealant like I said above on the Gen 2 pan. Even though the regular gasket ( paper type ) is available aftermarket.

On the Gen 1 MINI pan , MINI has the regular rubber gasket w/ metal washers.
