Hood scoop nightmare... :(

Hey guys here is the "scoop" im working on my 5th hood scoop in less than 4 months and im not a happy camper.....
My MCS is a 2008 Lightning Blue, The 1st "scoop" was warped due to the turbo heat (replaced), 2nd one too (replaced), 3rd they installed it and told me it wouldn’t warp and they still DIDNT install the heat shield so now the scoop hasn’t warped but the paint is coming OFF.... So I go to the dealer and they order another one, a (4th hood scoop) finally the scoop comes in, the dealer calls me and they install it, this time they also installed a heat shield... but the paint DOESNT match not even close... and there is dirt all under the clear coat... so by now im pissed The Service manager couldn’t be nicer he was not too happy with the outcome of the hood scoops (all 4 of them) I told them just give me a CF JCW and we can call it even....lol

any ideas on what i can do?

anyone ever had any trouble like this?

I tried and they said they couldn’t (or they WONT) it would save them a lot of $$$ parts, paint and man Hours if they just replaced it with a CF JCW scoop. I called Corporate customer relations and they agree with me as far as the scoop being replaced many many MANY times and just replace it with a CF one im just tired of taking off work and going to the dealer and going through so much **** this will be my 5th one and i bet i will be going back to the dealer for a 6th one soon.....GRRRRRR!!!!!

I just went with the chrome one, but I have heard others say they agreed to pay part of the cost of the JCW CF one, and the dealer did it for them. I think some folks got the scoop for under $100.

That sucks. I can't say I have the same issue since my dealership is excellent with customer service. I had my summer tires put on and ended up with a nail/screw in one of the tires. Didn't find out till the next day even though the prompt for low tire came up before I drove off lot (reset it cause I thought it was from swapping tires out). Dealership paid cost for new tire and free install. Another example, today they took longer than expected with an install and said they would only charge me for parts.

Having a good car dealership for service and issues is always a super benefit. I would shop other car dealerships and see if they will take your business in providing you with a CF hoodscoop if your current dealership doesn't give you one.

if you are under warranty you should get it replaced, like i said im working on my 5th one and they are NOT cheap ( for the dealer, not for me they are free) but still as much as they have spend on mine i wish they would just give me a JCW and call it the day!!!!! i know by the time my warranty expires i will be back for atleast 3-4 more

I would get it repainted right and just keep swapping it (2yr warranty on replaced parts even outside of the 4 year 50k mile). I like CF but it still has a chance of getting messed up if your car is really getting that hot. The resin could become damaged if there is that much heat where you warped one in 4 months. I warped one pretty soon after I got my car but I opened up all of the closed holes in the screen and since then the scoop has been much cooler right after parking.

yeah my 1st one was like that, the 2nd one was worse. If i was you before it gets worse, get it changed. On mine i even went as far as installing a NM turbo heat shield so i wouldnt have to worry about getting warpped, now i have to worry about it being a diffrent color or dirt under the clear coat and peeling....

Here's a trivial thing about these scoops and the little bend in your picture...I have the same thing on my 2010, with that heat shield. Try this and you'll find the root cause: Open the hood (bonnet) and find that one push in fastener that's dead center right under that bend...squeeze it together to release, and push up slightly...you'll hear it release (maybe 1/16")...poof, sag gone.

I see what you are saying, I just tried it and it wouldn't move even with some plyers I tried to squeeze it while still being gentle, when I pushed it up to see what it would look like the right side pushed up even more, sticking up way above the other side of the scoop. I don't know whats worse having it indent or having it stick up.

Matey,

Mine looked just like yours when I carried it in. MINI of Charleston would only replace it with the heat shield if I got the chrome scoop. I kind of miss my LB scoop, but the chrome one does not show rock chips anywhere near as bad as the LB one did.

I'm still waiting for mini to come out with their new scoop, its suppose to be some sort of composite alloy that will not get the dreaded warp, I heard about it last time my mini was in the shop, they said it should be dropping soon.

I was on the phone today with NM Engineering asking them about another product and the subject came up about their new $85 heat shield that adheres to theunderside of the hood. I'm thinking I may need to add it to my order with the NM torque arm mount......

Bummer...Oh well, works for me. I leave it pushed up, no biggie. But now and then when drying it off or something, a little pressure pushes it back down. Lift the bonnet, nudge it back up and good to go.

Just an observation, was hoping it would help.

Larry,

I think Way Motor Works has the heat shields which will fit the 2011s now. I would check with him because I can bet his price for the shield is WAY better than $65.

Wondering if this would help out, mine started warping towards the top. Gonna take it in to get it replaced next week.

+1

It will definitely let more hot air escape versus the standard opening.

There is a new hood heat shield that Mini makes and it can be had at out motoring.com. It clips on the underside of the hood and install in 30 seconds. Cost around $25. Noticed a big differance with less heat on top of scoop. Worth not going through all the replacement and painting hassle.

Just remove the inlet guard on the hood scoop, it lets 10x more air vent and also flush to reduce under hood temps. One of the first things i did and no warpage here.

What do you mean by inlet guard? Is it the current insert?
