New engine for MINIs?

Hello all!

I just read on the news that PSA is no longer supplying engines to BMW for the MINIs. Is this true?

I sold my car because the stealership could never fix the cold start chatter and got fed up with the car... I wonder if a new engine would get rid of that issue...

What exactly did it say? Link?

There has been talk that the PSA relationship may not continue for the 3rd generation (debut around 2013). In the meantime, MINI needs a supplier and it's really hard to change in the middle of current production. The cold start chatter is said to be fixed by recent updates to the engine, especially with the 2011 refresh.

Yes BMW and Peugeot will not renew their contract with each other sometime at the end of the R56 generation. Does not mean that the last of the R56s won't have the Prince motor.

3 cylinder naturally aspirated and turbo motors that are lighter, yet more powerful and fuel efficient are being developed by BMW for the 3rd gen MINI, due out in 2013.

didnt hear that, but I could be wrong. all I know is that they will be 3 cylinder with more displacement, lighter, more fuel efficient, and more powerful.

however, it would seem odd that BMW would not offer a non-turbo option for those who want one (or hate turbos). to not do so would reduce their potential customer base hugely.

They might but not in the US market because it will not have enough power. It would make sense in the UK because the speed for driving in town is pretty slow but, here in the US a lot of people do highway drving and with a 3 cylinder you probably are not going to have enough to get up to speed.
