Ha - nice! And yes, we do seem to have an inordinate amount of minis here in SF. Every time I drive with my kids in the city, we play this Mini spotting game. They usually average 7 to 10 for about a 20 minute ride.
not at all , I live in the 2 of the gay capitials of the world amsterdam and orlando. san fransico is a very multiculture city plus s.f. has a very severe parking problem ,unlike say sanford florida where everyone drives billybob 4x4s or a huge mercedes and zero parking problems.

I think there are a lot of reasons why Minis seem to be so popular here in SF - not the least of which is parking, which can be nightmarish at times. Not long ago, my wife and I drove around for over 40 minutes looking for a place to park for drinks with a coworker in the Mission. We ended up bailing.
Fuel is expensive in CA, and particularly so in the bay area. So fuel efficiency certainly factors in here. You see a lot of Prius' and Smarts around here as well, but Minis have the advantage of performing well, especially on the many twisty, hilly streets that you find here, and on all the freeways that intertwine the city as well.
You also have to consider that San Francisco is seeing a sharp trend in families leaving the city (for a lot if reasons, including schools, cost of living, etc.). Now, while I have two child seats permanently lodged in the back of my Mini, most people don't buy these as family cars. There are a lot of singles and couples in SF, and something like the Mini makes sense if you're just driving yourself or one other person around.
San Francisco also fosters a sense of individualality, where creativity and self-expression are historically accepted and celebrated. Minis are to some extent a mechanical analogy to this in both their iconic form, and ability to be highly personalized (even in their numbers, no two are ever exactly alike).
Whatever the reason for the car's popularity around here, I'm definitely envious of the guy who owns the only dealership in town!

Even better than that is owning the only Hyundai Dealership in a metro area with a population of 1,ooo,ooo
Regarding the photo, that's just way too cute.
I haven't been to San Francisco since MINIs were introduced so I wouldn't be able to tell you how common they were... haha. Last time I went there I didn't pay attention to what kinda cars there were. :P
