Cutting it a little close, eh?

I was running late today and when I stopped at the traffic light right before my shop, I looked down and saw this.

I made it to my shop less than a mile down the road... according to the gauge, nothing left.

I managed to make it even an add'l mile to the gas station.

I think this is the most I've ever had to put into my mini.

I don't like to run that low but today I was really running late.

Any more and I may have been walking....

Mark

Too funny! I'm one who starts hunting for a gas station before the candy corns turn red!

I suspect that is going to cause a fuel pump failure.

Nope, car was still running... it never did run out of gas.

Besides, this is the new and improved fuel pump. Remember, the first one died the first week I owned the car.

What I find rather astonishing about this is that $42.00 dollars worth of gas actually fits into the tank of MINI...........

Prices are going up why exactly ? Some 12 million Americans unemployed, and NOT driving to from work, some selling their cars. Cars for Clunkers came and went taking gas guzzlers off the road, and these bastards still find reasons to raise the price of a gallon of fuel....

Is it me or is anyone else here getting rather sick of being lied to ?

Considering I have run almost every tank to or past the -- by about ten miles consistently for over 80k and have yet to run out or kill my fuel pump I think you would have been ok for a few more miles Mark. But yeah getting to that point is certainly pushing it.

You've got me beat by .03 gallons. My biggest fill up in my R57 was 14.359 gallons.

This is about the OP nearly out of gas and maybe having the record of gallons put in a MINI. Why hijack it about that kind of stuff? Come on... Good Grief!

I think people need to get over the fact that gas prices are high, it's not going to stop.

Seeing that Mark paid about $2.92 a gallon, that's pretty cheap to me considering all the gas I have put in my car lately has been well over $3.05. Damn NY/Erie County taxes.

Not only does that seem like a record for cutting it close, it may also be a record for the most accurate MINI gas gauge.

Where is the fuel pump located? I've heard that it needs gas to cool it. Is that just gas flowing through it, or is it in the tank and using the gas surrounding it for cooling as well?

In California you can fit more than $42 in a tank.

Prices are going up why exactly ?

Oil prices are rising. Almost reached $80 today. That almost always means increased gas prices. While jobs are trailing, other aspects of the economy are recovering. Home values are showing signs of recovery, and the stock market has made rather surprising gains.

Fuel capacity in the owner's manual is shown at 13.2 gallons. How the heck is anyone getting over 14 in there??

You will see 14 gallons when the indicator is <20 miles. My personal "best" is 14.18 gallon filled in with 8 miles left.

Well, I was sitting there hoping the light would turn green. Of course, it just turned red so I was going to be there for a while.

Let me translate that for anyone.

"Hi, I'm from one of the countries that supplies oil to the US and realized that I need another Rolls Royce to let rot on the side of the road. Therefore, I need more money so Thank you USA, we appreciate it."

Freakin' greedy basturds, there is NO REASON for gas prices to be more than 2-2.25 per gallon other than greed from the suppliers of raw oil and the processing plants.

Having said that.... I completely agree with this statement.

Though I feel we are getting overcharged, I guess we should consider ourselves lucky, we could be paying what Europe pays.

I agree.

This was in Canada, July 2008
8.8 gallons $57.49 (Canadian dollars)
You can't read the price but I think it was $1.719/liter

Prices aren't determined by what we think they should be. Oil (and gas) prices are largely determined by the old rule of supply and demand. Demand for oil worldwide is soaring. The days of the US being able to use our military and financial power to artificially hold down our gas prices are quickly leaving us behind.

When I was in Germany last year, I paid $8 - $10 a gallon for gas. Fuel is taxed very highly in Europe, partly to reduce fuel consumption. This has worked; in Europe you see a culture of small, fuel efficient cars, deisel cars, and lots of people who simply walk, ride a bike, or use public transpotation. This is what we need in the US. We have a culture of driving everywhere, of people buying huge inefficient vehicles - all fueled by our low gas prices. Of course, supply will be dwindling, and worldwide demand will continue to rise. Our culture must adapt.

Personally I think gas prices are too low. Because we tax gasoline relatively little compared to many other countries, our gas prices are more market-based, so when prices go up a lot, it's usually because of the old rule of supply and demand.

Steve
