My MINI is 3 days old and windshield is cracked :(

Yesterday a rock kicked up on the freeway and cracked my windshield. At that point my car had only 175 miles on it. Talk about bad luck. sheesh. The dealership wants $800 for an OEM windshield and about $400 for an aftermarket one. Boo.

On a positive note, my car has been a blast to drive. Here's a pic.

That's gotta be a record! I hope that this is the only problem you'll have with your new ride for a long time. Lookin' good

I've got a broken one too My dealer quoted $600 for a new one. $500 is my insurance deductable...bleh. I hate how the dealer loves to screw me. I got a quote on a Safelite windshield for $220 but still would want to get a replacement done by the dealer since my car is still under warranty (10,000 miles). I've heard bad stuff about improperly sealed windshield causing damage to wiring. That would be a nightmare.

MOTOR ON!

rock to the windshield should be a no fault claim under comprehensive coverage

and you might want to look at your comp deductable and ask about the effect of changing that to zero ... I found I could drop comp deduct from $200 to zero for about a dollar a month.

of course better yet is to move to FL where state law says no deductable on a windshield claim so long as proper coverage is in place (comp)

forget the dealer for glass - they probably sub it out anyway. I've used SAFELITE many times over the years with no complaints - didn't like the job one time and one call got them back the next day for a complete do-over no charge. Actually USAA sends all glass claims to SAFELITE. Final tally on the 02 was 3 new screens, all by SAFELITE, no problems. Work done in the driveway.

I use a local guy (1 man mobile shop) and he ordered OEM MINI glass from his supplier. $375, did the work in my driveway.

Nobody knows MINIs better than the MINI dealerships, but they aren't the best choice in some instances. Just sayin'.

Oh yea, sweet looking ride. Bummer 'bout the winder.

Same thing happened to me last week; just pulled out to pass a semi, and BANG!
I had the windshield replaced yesterday, in my driveway.
State Farm's cost was around $650; my cost was zero.

Using RealOEM to get the part number, you may be able to get the OEM window and have it installed by a local glass company cheaper than what Mini wants. My dealer cracked my windshield at the last service. They replaced it, but while I waited I checked online and found Pelican Parts had it for about $300.

That's good to know. I'll check that out.

The crack is only about 1/2" long right now and it's at the bottom of the windshield. Does anyone know if a crack like that is repairable. It's not in my line of sight so I guess I can deal with it for now if I can get it repaired.

You beat me, that's for sure. Mine got cracked right across the passenger's line of sight at around 1400 miles, but I got it replaced for free due to one of the warranties I signed up (read: paid) for.

mine was after 4 weeks. The glass place told me it was stress fracture and MINI should fix under warranty. MINI says no and figured a way to get a pen point in some place.
So back to glass place where it was fixed fully under my insurance for 0 charge to me.
Nice flexibility at MINI/BMW dealer where I have only bought 10 cars.

Call your insurance and ask about this

My insurance would fund a repair fully despite deductable ...

SAFTELITE and any other decent glass place will do this at home or work and it doesn't cost much.

Alto in my experience it works better for a chip then it does for a crack. A crack extending to the end is probably gonna spread from stress no matter if stress was the cause or not. The DIY kits warn about this.

The dealership I bought the car from (Crevier in Orange County) quoted me $800 for an OEM replacement. I asked if there was anything they could do on the price like sell it to me at cost but honestly I wasn't expecting them to do much. About an hour later my salesman called me back and said they would sell me the OEM glass for $350 and charge me $100 to put it in. Props to Crevier.

I had a small chip tried to do the repair and it ran. Finally ended up changing it using safelite ad paid my 250 deductible. No issues and I will check into lowering my deductible.

When I took the major hit that I felt needed to have the windshield spot repaired I went to the local glass shop. They asked for the keys which I provided along with the question of did they want me to drive it around back. The sales rep said no and I proceeded to wait outside. When the repair tech walked out with the key fob in his hand looking for the "key" and then took one look at the M7 Carbon Fiber shift **** asked where is the key? I asked him if I should drive it around back and he was more then willing to let me. The crack did run under repair however it was so small that it lasted another 4000 miles and a month and a half in time before I had more hits and stars starting so I got the window repaired.
