R56 New hot MINI Diesel
New hot MINI Diesel
MINI WILL LAUNCH A NEW RANGE OF MORE POWERFUL DIESELS NEXT YEAR.
KICKING OFF WITH A MINI HATCH EQUIPPED WITH ENGINE FROM A BMW 120d.
POWER 159bhp. DETUNED FROM THE 120d 177BHP.
SOURCES SAID IT WOULD ALSO BE POSSIBLE TO USE THE MORE POWERFUL
TWIN TURBO DIESEL FROM THE 123d IN THE MINI.
THAT WOULD CREATE A MINI DIESEL WIYH OVER 200bhp,AND COULD FORM THE BASIS FOR A JOHN COOPER WORKS DIESEL MINI.

True. Unfortunately, thanks to the morons in California and Washington, we probably won't get it here, because of "emissions" and "global warming".

I heard this before April 1st, but I still think it's a joke. None of those engines are certified for USA sale, and unless BMW plans on selling them in the 1 or 3 series also, I can't see them actually putting in effort, despite how brilliant an idea that would be.
The fact that Diesel fuel is more energy dense than gasoline or ethanol makes it the best viable solution until we can build a nuclear/electric infrastructure that isn't dependent on oil.

This question was asked to MINI brass numerous times, in both official and unofficial (read: press conferences and not) discussions in Feb., and the party line remains that since the diesel may only offer marginal gains over the 40 mpg Cooper, there are no plans to bring it here at all.
And maybe I'm missing something, but wouldn't the diesel from the 120d need to be switched to a FWD format for the MINI? Is this easily done?
I'm thinkin' 'twas a fun trick for us!
