So I just saw a commercial that said the Escalade hybrid gets better gas mileage in the city the an auto convertible mini cooper s WTF?!!? I think they might be a little skewed
they picked the 1st gen convertible s auto, the worst on gas, and compared it to a hybrid in stop and go traffic.... The hybrid has a HUGE advantage in city driving.
Yeah, that's a bogus ad. I saw another one where they compared the new GTO to a 5 series (550i I think). That car's not even remotely comparable! They should have compared it to a 135i or a 335i or something. That was a real WTF for me.
It is like saying that a F430 is faster than a auto toyata yaris. if they are aiming to prove it is fuel efficient why take the heaviest supercharged mini with auto box to compare it to?
And why are they comparing it to a small drop top sport car and not something like the Lexus Hybrid?
hmm so what happens to the MPG when they get on the freeway? is it still better I don't think so. Hell I was watching Top Gear the other night and they had a Pirus go around their track at top speed with an M3 or M5 following behind at the same speed... and the BMW had a better MPG (this was at 75MPH). I highly doubt that the Caddy really beats the R52 in that area.
Yeah, the Prius test wasn't really fair either, as you're comparing a car being run at its extremes with one trailing along at low revs. Made for good television, though.
yeah but thats the point hybrids aren't all they are cracked up to be. on the freeway they are just like every other 1.5L or 1.6L engine or possibly worse

Like every other 1.5L or 1.6L... carrying a large battery pack along with it. Hybrid makes sense if you do mostly city-cycle driving, but if your commute is primarily highway, then you're better off with an efficient small-displacement 4-cylinder. Doesn't even have to be a small car--a four-cylinder Accord would do. Plus, you don't damage the environment with a big battery pack that would need to be produced and recycled/disposed of.
It baffled me, at first, to see tonnes of Prii cruising along the freeways in LA and San Francisco. Then I remembered: a.) that it's California, and b.) hybrid = carpool lane stickers.
They do this because every dumba$$, knows-nuttin'-bout-MINIs, ****** ask me "What kinda mileage you get in that?". I have even been asked how much gas it takes to fill it up. In their minds the only reason to drive a smaller car is to save on gas.
The cads are just trying to take advantage of the misconception. Hehe, those CADS!
However, there is such a thing as bad press. That's why journalists get sued for libel. Had a friend (a photojournalist) go through that a few years ago. Not fun.
The ad compares the 2008 hybrid Escalade to a 2006 MCSC auto (worst mpg of the range). It's worth noting that the $54000 price in the ad is also for the non-hybrid escalade. The base hybrid version is 70685. You could get 2 base 2009 MINI Cooper S JCW Convertibles for that much (26city/34hwy/29combined) with about 2k left for options.

2k left over for options? split between two cars?! I could get a couple official MINI-branded window-mount cupholders for about that much in options money!

Actually, that may just be some sue-happy entity (company? person?) with a poor grasp on PR.
Cadillac also makes the comparison on their web site. If you click on fuel efficiency you will see the comparison of the 2008 MCS Convertible to the hybrid Escalade.
The Hybrid Escalade costs $75K. I think I would rather have a couple MINIs, but that's just me.
Also if you read the fine print in this add it says that the MPG is only better when the top is down. Put the top up and the MPG rating is higher. Marketing and statistics can cause a lot of people make assumptions about things that are not exactly true.
I saw that add too. This is typical American car company BS. The last 60+ years they have been telling us that the average family of 3.5 people NEED a car that seats 7 and can haul 7000 lbs. of other crap we probably don't need. It is also why GM, Chrysler, and Ford are on the verge of bankruptcy. If the US automotive industry is going to survive they need to start producing good cars that people want to buy, and stop trying to convince us that we need to buy what they are producing.
