Cold start issue in non-S MINIs?

Q1) After reading here and Mortoringfile, not really sure if the "Cold Start Issue" affects non-S Mini's?

Q2) Besides from being turbocharged, are both S and non-S engines the same Peugeot design?

We are planning on purchasing a 2009 non-S in the near future after owning an 05 with CVT. We don't wish to make the same "mistake" as we did in 2005.

TIA..

It affects both cars. My dealer has a couple 07 and 08 MCs with a persistent cold start rattle, and my 09 S developed it last week with barely 2500 miles on-the-clock (only once, 40F out, and it lasted for 20 seconds, since then fine.)

Funny thing: an automotive engineer in MI whose company supplied valve parts for the R50/53 Tritec seems to know what the problem is, and it is a relatively easy fix, but BMW/PSA engineers have turned a blind eye, and are not wont to admit that it's faulty engineering. Very frustrating. Anyway, if U wish to read some this engineer's writeups and theories, go to this link. You will feel smarter after doing so.

Sequence,

Thank you for the info. I went to our local dealer yesterday (Classic Mini in Ohio) and asked him about the "cold start issue". He informed me that he was aware of the problem and that Mini was supposed to send a "fix" to the dealers for cars that had already been produced. He mentioned something about issues involving the intake manifold if I am not mistaken. He did not know if Mini is incorporating the "fix" in the newly ordered Mini's or not. I was there to specifically look at the new Horizon Blue.

At any rate, it didn't make me want to place an order at this time especially since I watched a sales girl start up a new Mini on the lot for a couple waiting to test drive one. The temperature at the time was 34 degrees F and I distinctly heard the diesel type noise that has been recorded here at NAM and Motoringfile.

Although my wife and I really want to place an order for a new Mini, I will DEFINITELY WAIT this issue out. I had originally thought that this issue was only in S models.

I believe it to only be on the S. I've never heard of anyone talking about the issue on the MC. The thread is full of people with the S complaining of the rattle, but only a scant one or two on the MC. I believe that to be more due to someone thinking they are supposed to have a noise, than those that actually do.

I also went and checked mini2.com and their database on cold start rattle. I found no mention whatsoever on cold start rattle and the mc, only mcs.

That's good to hear about the non-s, possibly not having the problem. I'm still waiting till the summer to order mine. Hopefully there will be a fix for all. Fingers crossed.

During the one week -10° snap we had in Vancouver, I didn't get any cold start rattle from Oliver.

My MA has informed me that it only impacts the S, and they do have a fix in place.

It could be a number of things... I hope I can replace mine soon... I've read people developing this problem past 20,000... I'm at 15,200.

I'm no expert... but I've been kinda watching this and haven't heard about any MC's being affected... We have a MCClubman and while only having it for a few weeks, it's been quite chilly several mornings, and have not noticed any type of noise.
