Window gremlins

I opened the driver's window to get a parking lot ticket, and when I flipped the switch to close the window it closed then immediately opened half-way. It continued to do this. I was able to get it closed by holding the switch in the down position so it was fully open, then held the switch in the up position until it closed.
Now, the 1/2 inch movement the window made when opening and closing the door is only about 1/8 inch.
It seems the system needs to re-boot itself.
Has anyone experienced this? Is there a quick fix I can do or is this a job for MINI Service?

I had similar problems to that a while back. A quick fix is a sharp whack to the door between the speaker and the door handle. The real fix is a service appointment. They did mine as an emergency and said they did a software upgrade. I haven't had any problems since (but I hadn't had any problems befor either.)

My car is in for the same thing. There is now Service bulletin for both R56 and R55 since a couple of weeks ago. My wife's Clubman had both windows have the same problem. Hers are now fixed. Take it in a they will reprogram the computer. I get mine back tomorrow. I let everyone know if that fixes the problem.

I had to take my Clubman in because for the first 2" down or last 2" up, there was a terrible "squeak" from the windows (more prevelant on the driver's side, but occassionally on the passenger side).

They had to take the door panels off and even had to replace the track on the DS. Well, now my DS window does the same thing yours is doing, only it is intermittent. I guess I'll have to take it in for another visit, but it's good to hear that it's a software fix, and not where they have to remove the door panels again.

Mine is fixed for now. My wife's Clubman will go back in for her driver's door not venting properly.

Mine started doing that on a long road trip into the mountains (in the twenties the whole time). I would eventually go up and stay up after about a 1/4 mile of driving. It hasn't done it since, but now I will check with my SA.

Thanks.

If both my windows are half way down and I decide to have them both go up at the same time. One side will go up and the other will go down. I can get it to do this once outta 7 or 8 trys. its strange

there have been so many problems with BMW-sourced window parts thru history I bet a good technician could diagnose and repair window issues blindfolded. Window regulators were the first thing to go on my 2005 MCS-- except in the BMW service bay a $94,000 6-series cabrio is having YES the same issue, and it only had 2K on the clock (I had 3.)

owner shrugged it off. "that's my 8th bimmer," he told me, "every one Ive ever owned had some kind of window issue." But then he mentioned that he thought the replacement parts were better quality, because for all his window issues with 7 previous Bimmers, they "never recurred again once the factory parts were replaced."

Same with me. Never had window issues again once they were replaced on my MCS. So there is light at the end of the long BMW window issue tunnel. good luck

The fix was done in December and it was indeed a computer re-programming.
It was fine until this weekend: it's b-a-a-a-ck!
How annoying......

The window needs to be re-initialized. Saturday I had a problem with the Clubman S passenger side window....

Basically, the auto-up stopped working. Also I was only able to open the driver's side window with the keyfob button, but the passenger side would stay closed.

The auto-down was still working on the passenger side window. But it would refuse to auto up and open/close from the keyfob button and key lock in the driver's side door handle with the passenger door fully shut close.

After doing some search, it appears that the window on the passenger side was stuck in "Door open mode". If you open the door, the window will auto down, but will not auto-up. Also you can not down the window (or put it back up) with the keyfob button or keylock in the driver's side door handle when the door is open. This is normal operation only when the door is open.

The computer was "thinking" that the driver's side door was still open, when in fact it was shut close. Interestingly, the 1/4 window drop feature still worked when opening and closing the passenger door. The "pinch" safety feature was still working as well.

It turns out the passenger window had to be re-initialize. Being the computer/IT head that I am I figured there was a way to "reset" the window position mode in memory and get the computer out of "door open mode".

In the R53 MINI, to reset the windows, you hold up the window toggle switch for 5-10 seconds to re-initialize them in the computer.

In the R56 and R55 is different. You have to hold down the affected power window toggle switch for at least 15 seconds and then fiddle the switch in a rapid 5-7 second sequence up and down. Then bring the window all the way up with the door closed.

Start the car. Presto! that did it. Now the passenger door auto-ups again and both windows can be opened/close from the keyfob button and the keylock cylinder in the driver's side door handle.

The windows in these cars are computer controlled as the computer needs to keep track of whether the door is open or not, if the windows are being lowered or raised with the doors open or closed, etc.

Too complicated. Our cars are rolling computers LOL.

This is not a windows regulator problem. This is a computer/software problem.

Mine was a regulator problem. I went through the reprogramming twice and it didn't work. The third time I brought my car in, they stated it was a regulator permanent failure and they replaced my window motor with a new and improved one. Its been working fine ever since!

See these threads: I've had my footwell module replaced and the software upgraded...problem is back again - my SA says that corporate is aware and they are telling people to "sit tight" until they can figure this out..... kind of ridiculous if you ask me.

Thanks for the references -- it is remarkable that so many complaints on the same issue are out there and MINI has not pulled together a fix.
Rather disappointing.....

I'm going to go with the regulator problem too. Peruse any BMW, MINI, Audi, or VW forum and see all the issues with OEM window regulators. VAG even had a "soft" recall a few years back which basically would replace your regulators when (not if) they failed no matter how old the car. They may honestly think they're addressing it with software patches but history says otherwise. The only German car I know of that doesn't seem to have this as a prevalent issue is Porsche, perhaps they use a different supplier.

Have owned 4 MINIs in 8 years and have not had window regulator problems....I guess I am lucky.

The way the windows work in these cars is too complicated. The computer must keep track of whether the door is opened or not, whether the keyfob or keylock was used, etc. Seems easy for the computer to get "confused" and screw up the functionality.

Mine just recently started having the problem described by the OP. Not encouraging that people are on their 2nd and 3rd trips in for the same problem... I am 7 hrs round trip from the closest dealer!

Oh wow that's far. My dealership is 1.2 miles away - sometimes if I hit both traffic lights on the way there it can take up to 6 minutes.

Nevertheless it shouldn't be a recurring problem and it is.

I brought the car in to correct the problem and -- thanks to all of you -- was able to tell MINI Service what was needed (i.e. not just another 'initializing.') They told me they would take it one step at a time 'cause that is the factory's directive (at least they recognize there is an issue here.) Assuming the worst I insisted on a loaner, which they readily provided (it ended up taking 3 days.)

MINI Service first programmed the vehicle, reset the fault memory, then initialized both windows. They took it for a test drive, and the fix failed.
They needed to order a new window motor, which was over-nighted to them and installed. The issue now appears to have been fixed.
I'll keep my fingers crossed...
