A mirror(chrome) background would look awesome , but...
...one thing I've learned over the past couple of years is that chrome vinyl can be somewhat fragile and tends to show nicks and scratches pretty easily. My MINI's color theme is Hot Orange/chrome/black and as I've come up with different ideas I've had several vehicle graphics shops tell me the same thing about chrome decal material so I've had to modify certain ideas.
Silver's finish/appearance would last longer, but I'm not sure if it would give you the "shine" you're looking for.

I've got a set of magnetic meatballs that I use for Driver's Education days at the track. They were made for me by Ed at Cooperflags at least 2 years ago by a custom order. I think they cost under $90 for all 4 of 'em (2 large for the doors... 2 small for the front and back for fun).
I use a few inches of double-sided carpet tape on the lead edges, just to make sure that they don't blow off at track speeds... just in case!
If you decide to go magnetic, I would strongly recommend using only the numbers 0, 1, 6, 8 and 9 in your number and to get at least a 2 digit number. It's important for DE events to have each car with a unique number and cars with permanently attached numbers have priority over ones with magnets/tape. By using these numbers and a 'flippable' font, you can give the DE organizer 2 different possible numbers to use... for example: I can be #68 or #89, depending on which way I rotate the magnet! I recommend atleast a 2 digit number because the guys with permanently applied numbers frequently choose single digits and you are more likely to run into conflicts with them.

I have a pair of meatball magnets with my St Louis MINI Club membership number that I got through the club. They are 16" diameter magnets with 5" numbers. I'm not sure if there is a required size for DE events, autoX, etc. though.

Here is a mirror number look
This is from the company I bought my meatballs from.

The circle on my mini are 18"
BTW I thought agranger had a good idea on the 180 degree numbers.

Hmmmmmm....
I wanted to do this too... But I got black rims so I dont think it would look to good... What do you guys think?
I kind of like these
http://new.minimania.com/web/Item/G2.../InvDetail.cfm They look great on the Minis ive seen on here, and they mix up the 'classic' meatball look.

It's hard to tell from my pics, but the background on my meatballs is a carbon fiber vinyl with a metalic silver number and pinstripe around the outside edge.
Sorry... I forgot to get a measurement for you last night. I'll try to do it this weekend!

Woo Hoo... no need to measure! I remembered that I posted about my new meatballs years ago on my local club board and found the post!
-----------
I've been working with Ed for several weeks to pin down the design on a set of magnetic meatballs for Jango. I went to him because I've heard that he does great work and because he supports a lot of MINI events with free Cooperflags gift certificates and other swag.
I finally decided on these specs and let him figure the rest out...
1. Two 14 Inch circles for the doors - Two 6 inch circles for the boot and bonnet
2. Black carbon fiber background
3. Silver metallic numbers
4. Numbers = 86
5. Sans-sarif font that, when flipped, makes a "98" from the "86"
Ed chose the font, the sizing and added a nice silver trim ring around the outside. He has a good eye and did a great job. He had 'em ready on-time and they worked brilliantly. I added a bit of double-sided tape to the leading edge, just to make sure that the magnets didn't lift at high-speed on the track.
In hindsight, I might have gone for 16" circles on the doors, but I'm very happy with what Ed did for me!

Thanks for all the info and comments. Below is the company where I get my blank vinyl (all sort of color, carbon fiber too). If you want to design or do your own "stuff" for your mini....this is the cheapest and fastest shipping site I found.

ps. I'll post my result when i am done. Thanks again.
