R56 FAQ: The difference between a Cooper and Cooper "S"
FAQ: The difference between a Cooper and Cooper "S"
Over the past few weeks, I have been trying to see how mini justifies the price differences between a Cooper and the S. Mainly out of curiosity and the desire of which model to purchase in the near future. I have located most of the details using various threads and by looking in the options manual provided by mini. If there is anything i need to change, add, or remove. Please send me a P.M. or post it up. I will modify the JPG. File.
I'm not creating this thread to say the cooper is better than the S or vise versa. I created this threat to answer so many peoples questions about what is hidden in the price difference between an S and a cooper.

While the list is nice to have and understand I am curious as to how it will change your purchase decision. If the cooper is adequate for your needs then buy it if something faster is required then buy the S or even better the JCW.
Of course the best way to tell is a test drive which I assume you have or will do.
Tallying the “justification pricing” isn’t really going to change your options as it doesn’t change the cost of the MCS if you want the performance option.

I agree w/ the others,
I think its nice that a car company offers a car and then a sportier version of that car. Many car companies do this, it's extremely common. Many like Porsche even offer 4 or 5 versions of the same model. I think it's to satisfy customer needs. i.e., the Clubman may satisfy a need completely different than the JCW, convertible or the base model to various customers.
I'd ask, what do you need and want and then purchase the model for you.

when you add a turbo, charge tubes, intercooler, downpipe, blowoff valve, wastegate, different ecu, the change in price difference is justified for what you get. if performance isn't what your looking for in the mini go with the non s, if you are an enthusist then go s or jcw.

I switched my order from an MC to an MCS.
Going from MC to MCS the following items become standard:
- Sport seats
- Front fog lights
- Rear spoiler
- 16" wheels
- Aluminum pedals
- Chrome fuel cap
- Dual chrome tip exhaust
- Turbo
Based on the items I wanted anyway on the MC, I figured the turbo was costing me roughly $1800 or so. Then I figured at resale I would get a majority of this amount back.

Given all the standard options with an MCS and the many uprated engine/brake bits, all I will say is that whatever extra MINI charges for an MCS is a very, very good deal. People who chose to pay extra are definitely getting their money's worth. If you want that extra power (I don't but many do), you will never get all that out of a Cooper. Best to get an MCS!!!
I just picked up my MCS a week early on Saturday, and the instant power delivery is just sweet. Makes the car feel much faster than it is (timing between 6.5-6.9 seconds to sixty on an Automatic, stopwatch-style), but it is tons of fun.
Cooper handles just as well as the S, but you don't have the power and various other options the S comes with. If you don't need the power or the seemingly frivolous options, get the Cooper... you won't be disappointed.
By the way... it is broken in. I drove a lot these few days. Let's just say it's a long trip to the dealer.
