hood scoop questions..

Hi all! As of now, I'm still waiting for my mcs 6spd to come in, but I'm already confused about the hood scoop

I know that the scoops are either fully closed or only semi open (btw anyone know what the july 08 build comes as?) and is pretty much....a phony when it comes down to bringing in cooler air to the engine air intake. However, correct me if I'm wrong, but if i install the alta cold air intake then will fully opening up my scoop actually do something in terms of cooling the engine?

Also, after searching around nam, it looks like completely opening up the scoop might not only have no positive effect, but might actually be detrimental due to rain being able to enter through the hood scoop. However, my question here is what's the difference between r53s (and other vehicles with hood scoops) and r56s because the functional hood scooped vehicles seem to be able to function properly in the rain, while apparently opening up the r56 will only bring harm to the engine.
(btw i'm a complete novice when it comes to mechanics so sorry if these questions don't make sense..)

The R56 hood scoops are partialy opened and from my experience the grill needs to be opened further to aid in cooling after shutdown to avoid deforming of the hood scoops. See link to thread below. I have experienced this issue and opened up my grill insert to avoid further deformation. No issues with rain.

the r53 had a functioning hoodscoop cuz it feed air to the top mounted intercooler for their supercharger. the r56 has an intercooler as well but it is located in the front of the car. if they were to get wet... there is very little issue. if you are stil confused... just look at a few mcs 1gen and 2gen engine compartment pictures... very very different

about the rain issue, alta said there is very little issue with opening the hoodscoop up and rain/water getting in your engine compartment.... however

if you are like some NAMers here (including myself), your hoodscoop might start to melt. opening extra holes may void your warranty.

possibly the best solution to all this is to purchase the JCW hoodscoop or an aftermarket one (m7). not only are the scoops open but it wont melt on yah

if your extra holes directly caused a failure to any of the engine components, then that particular component will not be covered for a warranty repair. simply opening some holes does not void your warranty.

So, does adding the JCW carbonfiber hoodscoop mean that they either open the existing hoodscoop or replace your bonnett with one that will accomidate the JCW hoodscoop? I just kind of figured they threw the JCW hoodscoop into the existing one, not chaning anything but the look... and the heat resistance, I guess.

Just threaten them with a warranty lawsuit if they do something ridiculous.

Opening some holes in the hoodscoop is not going to melt or waterlog your engine. I'd understand if it voided your scoops warranty, though. Maybe that is what he meant. If you modify its function (what little there is), then any support on it is gone.

Also, with the R56's intercooler mounted down in front, opening up the hood scoop forces the airflow into the top of the engine compartment, which could increase the air pressure on the back side of the front-mounted cooler, reduce the airflow through it and actually make it perform worse.
