What to do before big trip with new MC

Hey all, have thoroughly enjoyed my new MC but since I live on an island, haven't had the opportunity to REALLY drive her. Am considering taking a trip from Massachusetts to Nashville to pick up a new member of the family...a golden male pup. Crate fits perfectly in the back with one seat down (!!!yeah!!!) now I just have to make sure the car and I are prepared.
What do you all recommend I bring for such a trip? I have tutored myself regarding the spare, etc. but what do you guys bring when you go on long trips....? SOunds like a bit of a silly question, but want to be prepared...
Penelope has 933 miles on her.....almost broken in...

Check the tire pressure.

Check the oil level. The dipstick is a little hard to read. The trick is to get a paper towel, lay the dipstick on it, roll it a little to reveal the stain and it will tell you where the oil level is.

Wax the car, if you haven't recently. It will help clean off the bug roadkill.

Check the alignment of your mirrors and note where your blind spots are.

Can't think of anything else, at the moment.

at least (1) MP3 cd with music you can just play and don't have to cycle through for listening; considering it will be a long drive to/from.

a roadside flare (just in case)

a spare cell phone battery and/or a walkie talkie

a few bottles of spring water; ice pack is a bonus

an extra set of clothes

a camera

That's all i have at the top of my head for now.

Sounds like a fun trip.

This is my survival kit for road trips:
Slime (one container)
Air compressor (craftsman)
Dynaplug kit
Tool kit (phillips, flat-blade, torx, pliers, crescent wrench)
18" warning triangle
Flashlight (maglite)
Quick Detailing kit (Prima Slick & microcloth)
Tunes (i-pod)
Communication device (cell)

As advised, check the oil, tire pressure, and washer fluid before departing.

Most importantly, don't forget to wave and have fun.

You guys are great, thanks for the advice. Anyone carry a small fire extinguisher?
I am thinking of that and I have to ask, what is "slime"?
Robin, Thanks for the advice about the wax....I was wondering about the bugs and such on a long trip into the south...in the dead of summer...I wonder if I should get some sort of a bra (do they make those for MInis?) before I head out....had thought about the clearcoat protection but can't get it done in enough time....

Hi amazonb, good luck on the trip. . .

FYI - slime is a tire repair item/kit.
I have never used it, but it sounds like a good thing to carry . .

With an MC don't you have a spare? If so, I wouldn't bother with slime.

I think you're kidding yourself if you think that new pup will be riding in that crate, he will be 100X happier on a folded towel on your passenger's lap. Stop frequently (the puppy is a good excuse) and enjoy the drive. We've put almost 600 miles on our MC and it is only six days old! They're made to be driven.

Luigi will be my third golden and I agree about the crate thing....but I have to get him used to it for the hotel, home crate etc. Maybe we will do some time crate, sometime passenger....
I told my other goldens that the Tahoe was THEIR car...funny how we change our minds when we are in love...
I guess I should have put the money toward that fancy schmancy pet bolster, pad, cover I have seen on this forum.....
Thanks everyone for the great advice!!!

I got the boot filler/dog bed one. It is nice, but my standard decided she'd rather ride in the back seat! When bringing our poodle back on a five hour ride from Canada, she spent a good deal of the time on her blankie in my lap! Enjoy the trip and the pooch

Hand sanitizer

Rain-X. I thought it was all hype till I tried it out. You can drive through a downpour with your wipers off and still see fine - not recommending that of course. It also makes the bugs come off much easier.

Top off your windshield washer fluid. The sooner you gets the bugs off the glass the better. Once they bake on there, it's a pain to remove them.

I'd say a gas can is very optional. Tons of gas stations on the interstates so you don't really need it. If you do carry one, buy a new so it won't stink up your MC.

LOve that !!!! Don't want him to get to used to the back seat, he has to share with his sister when I return; she is an 80 # golden. BY the looks of him so far, he will match if not surpass her in size....I think I will keep the plan of the dog protector with seats down....
