top tier vs invigorate for gasoline
i found out about meet the high TOP TIER standards with all grades of gasoline from this nam. but amoco ultimate and bp gasoline with INVIGORATE will also clean your engine. why amoco ultimate or bp gasoline is not on the list of top tier's retailers? is gasoline with invigorate not good enough to meet the high standards for top tier?

The fuel additive debate runs all over the place, and personally I think payola has a role in the rating game. People that own gas stations will tell you that what goes into their tanks depends on what the tanker's fuel company added to his load of fuel (the type/amt of cleaning additive) that trip. It can vary with independant minimart gas stations, but it's pretty consistent with Chevron/Shell brand name dealers. The bottom line is that you don't really know for sure what you're getting, but you hope it's good if you go to a brand name station.

So called "name brand" gas stations are not required to sell their particular brand of gasoline. Shell, Texaco, Chevron or any other name brand can sell jobber gas if they choose. This was tested in court and big oil won. Pay the extra bucks if you wish but it's a crap shoot if you will receive gas that is any better than any place else.

Gasoline is a commodity.
In most geographies, like mine, there are innumerable brands, a number of fuel distribution/storage facilities and many fuel distribution firms ... but only one refinery.
The difference between one retailer's product and another come down to choices made at the distribution facility, by the fuel truck driver. This is why TheBigNewt mentioned that some low-cost retailers will buy product from any distributor that has the lowest wholesale price that day.
I buy from top tier retailers, not due to their additives, but due to relatively strict EtOH standards.

I can buy gas at the refinery where I work for a small discount. We also do not currently add any ethanol to the gas (although there are plans to do this in the future based on local demand)

That would make my mind up right there! What I meant is that the particular additive put in the tanker truck goes in after he fills with fuel and for Chevron it's probably Techron, Shell may be something else, Woody's Minimart somethng else, etc. But the E10 shouldn't vary if the tank is marked E10. That's a drag.
