R56 Heated Seats... Ouch
Heated Seats... Ouch
I was wondering if anyone else notices this with their heated seats. When I turn them on, regardless of the setting the first 3-5 minutes of them being on they are so hot they almost burn. They then simmer down to the selected temperature (3,2,1 lights). Do they do this to bast the cold from a sub-zero seat? but when it's only 40 degrees out it burns! Thanks.
Yes, that's what they do, but I can't say they burn. When it is time to use a heated seat, I usually like lots of heat to get the backside warmed up. I'd probably prefer it if just the back got that hot. Don't really need it on the seat, but I can live with it.
My guess would be that most people would probably prefer that when they turn the heated seat on, it warms up pretty quickly and then settles on a temperature. So that's probably why it works that way. Personally I don't find it too hot - just came in from driving it a few minutes ago and hated to have to get out (45F today and had the seat on).
I start on 3 quickly moving to 2. The wife loves 3 and wishes there was a 4 setting!
They sure do! Nice and toasty then cool down.
Oh, and they're great for a sore back too! I have mine on even thru the summer. Even on a long drive, I kick 'em in on 3 for a little while.

Yep, the munchkin thinks I'm nuts when driving along with the A/C and heat seaters.
I find that the extra hot of the mini heated seats are great for me. I am one that suffers back problems and the heat was a major plus. Our other cars, Lexus, has such soft and gradual heat that I can not feel a thing and gave up using it. I use my heated mini seats year round also.
The issue raised by many is that unlike other cars' heated seats, the Mini heaters control themselves, at least at first. You just can't put it on "low" and have it heat up gradually if that's what you want. My prior Jeep GC was fine on low (for me), my wife liked high. I get the impression that the Mini's seats don't give you a choice. I had wanted them, but after reading about this I'm glad I didn't get them. They broke twice in my Jeep so I soured on them anyway (they aren't cheap to fix either).
I don't know anything about "heaters controlling themselves", but I like the speed at which the MINI seats heat up. By the time I am out of my driveway (about 0.25 miles), I really feel the heat by then, which contrasts with the slow heat in our saab. I start at 3 then drop to 1 or 2, and then just leave it there.
I bought mine off the lot and, if I didn't I wouldn't have ordered it with the Cold Weather pkg.... but now I'm glad I did. When ever girls are riding with me they love the heated seats. I like that I don't have to blast the heater to warm up my date. I never use it, but my passengers love it.

Love, love, love those heated seats! I leave for work about 5:45 am and click it on 3 -- makes me feel all cozy. Even if it's going to be 80 during the day, the mornings are cold and I hate to turn heat on for some reason. The heated seats do the trick for me.

BTW, I didn't know that a Geek could get a date in S. CA.
