sport button

I wanted to ask -regarding the sport button- if there are any differences in petrol consumption when that button is turned on rather than being turned off! Is it more economic when turned off?

The sport button only changes the responsiveness of your throttle and steering. So while you can get the same economy you probably wont because you will have the tendency to accelerate harder producing worse economy.

More response = more horsepower = driving faster.

Yes, I'd expect to lose 1-2 mpg on a tank of gas running in sport mode. Even in cruising, non-sport rounds off even subtle throttle inputs where sport mode is more on-off. I like sport mode...but use non when I'm trying to optimize mpg.

Surfblue says: That's what I'm seeing...about 1 mpg difference in my town driving. I drove my 07 MCS with the button OFF well past the break in period, only trying it to make sure it worked. Then I started using it a bit, then a bit more, then a LOT more, and now it's the first thing that I click ON after the car is started. The only time I leave it OFF is if I'm doing a lengthy freeway drive. With the button off, I found myself not giving the car enough gas, causing it to "stumble" and sometimes even stall. I like the tighter throttle AND the tighter steering response in most situations.

I actually don't care for the remap the sport button provides, except for highway...highway I use it because it gives quicker acceleration at high speeds in top gears and tightens the steering so easy to stay in straight lane...otherwise always off...i like the regular throttle response (yes it is lagged but I've gotten used to it rather than sport on) and I could not imagine how much a work out twisties would be with the sports tighter steering.

I have always drove with it turned on as I prefer the position of the biting point from the clutch from sitting still.... and now I can't get used to driving without...

I did exactly the same thing! I need to read up on the mod that turns it on automatically. I consistently get 35 mpg in mostly sport mode driving 75/85 mph.

I do, too , but aside from personal preferences, I've started to think of sport mode less in terms of "sporty" and more in terms of simply two modes of optimization. One optimizes for more direct driver input, the other optimizes for economy. I do wish I could seperate steering from the throttle in these modes, but oh well.

As for launching...I used sport mode almost exclusively the first 8-months I had my R56 as it was such a delight to not have to overcome the low-rpm sluggishness of R50. For aggressive launching and tossing a MINI about...sport mode it the way to go.

I have, however, now adjusted to non-sport mode, too. It is well-suited to gradual, smooth launches. Driving a Cooper manual strictly for economy (non-sport), city-only driving, I'm consistently over 41 mpg on the OBC. Yes, that is city driving. Even if you factor in some possible slippage in the OBC (assuming there is any) that's pretty remarkable. Currently, I'm at 42.6 mpg (city) after one full week of driving on this tank. That makes non-sport (imho) a mode for optimization of economy performance and so a valid choice, depending on how you want the car to perform.

sport button AUTOMATICALLY ON at start

Guys: go see thread https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...d.php?t=103258 ... several R56 owners there have experimented and figured-out how to add a postage-stamp-sized circuit-board (see gallery -- I've built several now) in the fuse panel that automatically turns SPORT mode ON when you start the car ... highly recommended, and still switchable

Pretty good idea there, Gokart. Might have to try that myself.

Well, it works for me...others have reported different results. There are so many variables. Either way, the differences between modes is minimal...I just like to play w/ optimizing my mpgs (within reason).

If you've got an automatic tranny, it'll affect gas mileage since it does not upshift nearly as early as standard mode and locks out sixth gear until you're running at a fairly illegal speed in most places. If you're in sixth when you enable sport mode, it will immediately downshift. It also enables the engine assisted braking by automatically downshifting as you coast when you let off the throttle.

I usually dricve in Sport mode unless I am on a long highway trip so the steering is less twitchy.

When you move the auto shift lever over to them left (m/s), it says DS just like when you push the sport button. Is there difference? You dont get the steering and throttle response when you just move the lever to the left, right?

Yes, and for automatic the shift speed/smoothness is the same as D, not D+Sport.

My only caveat with not using Sport mode is the hesitation from start that is felt in "D" compared to DS... If you drive in Sport mode a lot, and then go back to not using it to conserve fuel around town, you will definitely notice it. I love the transmission, though; it's so versatile. I can get 6th gear in Sport mode by going manual; I can put the gearshift in manual and use the paddles, to avoid going back to auto mode; I can shift manually if I want to. I avoid Sport mode on long trips so I can stay in 6th and not worry about manually shifting when some idjit pulls in front of me because they like the middle lane, despite driving slower than the flow of traffic.

I read in the Factory JCW the sport button also put the car into overboost...is this true?
