Automatic Sport Button Mod

I've built the one shot relay circuit for automatically selecting sport mode when starting the car. Requires tapping into the cigarette lighter circuit for power sense, also tapping into the sport button wires, under the console.

Since the Sport button and the DSC are two seperate switches, Are you saying that there are 5 wires going to each of them ?, or both of them? are they in the same harness?. You could probably eliminate two of the wires as there is a light in each switch. Yes, it would be nice to have a complete wiring diagram of the Mini. Someday maybe we will be able to buy the complete shop manuals for the R56.

Maybe the JBE (Junction Box Electronics) module is more accessable?

(Second image is the X14272 connector)

Here's how: You need to build a simple relay circuit. Parts needed are a SPST 12v relay, 1,000uf 50v Capacitor, 10k 1/2 watt resistor. All available at Radio Shack for under $10.00.

When the circuit receives +12v from either the cigarette lighter circuit, or another switched circuit, the relay latches for 1/2 second, which switches the blue sport button wire to ground. The capacitor charges, which de-engerizes the relay coil, and the resistor bleeds off the capacitor, which keeps the relay coil from energizing again.

The attached diagram shows the relay wiper outputting +12v. Wiring of the relay contacts needs to be changed to output -12v (ground)

If you don't want to build the above circuit, here is one that is ready to go for $35.00: (#6062) http://www.hometech.com/brains/timers.html

Coffeman...this looks cool, but can you explain it in laymen's terms for those of us without a EE? (ie connect the blue wire to the yellow thingee, etc)

Hey coffeeman, where did you tap into the wires?? It's all that's left in the puzzle!!

I'd be happy to make a small tut...

You have to tap in on the fuse panel on passenger's side. You should have to remove the plastic cover (not the fuse panel cover). Once the plastic cover is removed, there is plenty of access to the fuse box & the connector that you need to access for the sport button.

Could someone post a slightly more clear explanation, I not quite sure I understand where everything goes.

On the attached image: (Image incorrectly shows GR/RT as the sport wire, it is the BLUE wire)

"-" and "NO" both go to ground
"+" goes to Fuse F32. Use the Bussman fuse tap, with a 2 or 3 amp fuse. http://www.bussmann.com/images/3c2dc...86ccd13aad.JPG

"C" goes to the sport button wire, Blue wire. You will find this wire on Connector X14272, at the bottom of the fuse panel. You have to remove the plastic sill/fuse panel cover to get to it. See above post for location of this connector.

Set up the module as follows:

DIP Switch:

1 on
2 on
3 on
4 off

Cut J2 (resistor), and set the trimpot to zero (fully counterclockwise)

Start the MINI, and see the sport button turn on by itself.

Disclaimer: Perform the foregoing at your own risk. If you are unsure of how to do this, then don't do it.

The problem is that the circuit "wants" to see a momemtary contact, not a continuous path to ground. You can emulate this by holding the sport button down...watch the LED dim to about half brightness as you hold the button.

Just a suggestion, but you could add up your cost and double it and probably sell a few of these kits here. Just include easy to follow (for us layman) instructions.
On another forum I belong to, there is one particular EE member who makes mods, offers them at a modest profit and actually has made a nice little side business out of it.

Like I said, just a suggestion

Yes, the relay latch time is easily programmable.

Actually, there is another member who is working on this, and also an auto up mode for the windows. Hopefully, he will have it ready for market soon.

Probably not a good idea to double up the wires, as they are two different circuits. You could use the ready to go timer module & hang a SPDT relay on the output, which would then give you 2 discrete momentary latching contacts for the sport button & ASC
