I'm looking forward to it. We've come a long way in the auto industry when there was a time black did not come in different shades, hues, or tints. Black was black.
It's a wonderful profit maker for MINI. $500 for everyone that wants a black car adds up to quite a bit of money. I reckon I should be thankful that they didn't metallicize chili red.
Black cars are great when you have a garage/driveway and time and willingness to keep them spotless. I have a friend of mine that likes black cars but never takes care of them...So what's the point? I think this new 2009 "Black metallic" is going to be a rehash of "Cosmos Black Metallic". For those of you new to the MINI world, this was a R50 Cooper only color offered between 2002-2004. Basically Cosmos Black was Jet Black solid with metal shavings in it. It was a nice color but fairly rare. Why pay the $400+ surcharge for metallic black when at the time you could also order Jet Black solid ($0 cost) on either Cooper or Cooper S? MINI's refusal to bring back Jet Black solid is simply a business decision. If you want black you have to pay the metallic paint $urcharge!
I think it's just about impossible to make everybody happy. But I do like how MINI mixes up the paint choices every few years. Very few auto companies do this.
