Hi all, just noticed that my Oil Service interval has dropped to 12,000 miles. Why, and how does it know

thats just telling you that you have approx. 12,000 miles until you need to get your oil changed. Its either approx. 12,000 miles or 1 year which ever comes first. Your OBC adjusts that number, depending on how you drive the car.

The owners manual says the OBC has a bunch of sensors that monitor how your car is operated, and adjusts the service intervals accordingly. Personally, I think it's done by Munchkins

Having just vacationed in Norway I am under the impression that it is done by Trolls.

Not true. Yes, MINI will change the oil after 12 months, but not before, if the OBC says you still have miles to travel.

To the OP, if you are worried about the excessive mileage on the oil, change it yourself before the year is up. Cheap and easy.

I think it is a random number generator.

Or, being from the British Isles, could be pixies or the fairy folk.

I picked my MCS up on May 10, 2007. My startup readout says 17,000 miles or May 13, 2009.

Perhaps there is a Rip Van Winkle element in mine. Hopefully a software update will take care of it.

No, it's more than 12,000 miles. I started out with 18,000, I think--can't remember and don't have the book handy. Now I have over 13,000 miles on the clock and "8,000" miles to go according to the counter. My SA did say that the numbers drop quickly the closer you get to the expected warranty mileage.

At any rate, we've been changing our own every 5,000.

They all start at 15,000 and can quickly go up. I know mine went to 17,000 and may have hit 18,000 briefly.

The date should say one year from production date instead of two years that way it is saying 17000 miles or one year. MINI must have made an error with that computer thingy.

Mine started out at 15000 and has dropped a thousand with every 1000 miles driven. So now I've got 2600 on her and she says 12000.

Mine was saying 19,000 this time last week, it's since gone down to 15,000 and then today to 12,000. I haven't been on a long trip and I haven't been driving it any differently......I think it finally woke up to the fact there are 6,800 miles on the clock already.

Mine started at 15,000, and has stayed there. I now have 3800 on the car.

I think it measures electrical resistance of the oil. As more carbon builds up in the oil the resistance changes and thus alters your mileage to service. My last started at 15k and moved up to 18k.

As much as people obsess about oil type and service interval. It is the water pump/head gasket with aluminum heads that that kills modern cars, or cause great expense. Crashing it at the Dragon is another...
