Sunroof yes/no?

So I keep going back and forth on if I should get a sunroof or not. What have been your experiences?

Are they capable of "popping up" or just sliding back?

I've heard some cons, any pros?

I've had an SUV w/o a sunroof for about 5 years now and I never missed it. Before that I had a little Mazda MX3 that had one and I did use it.

So I'm not sure if I'd use it or not.

I did not get one, and very happy about it.

When I test drove a car with the sunroof, it was a bright sunny day, and there was too much light coming into the car, even with the screens drawn.

I have ordered mine without a sunroof, I don't like them much on any car but that is only my personal preference. Some people LOVE them. I also didn't want to spend the $$$ on something I wasn't going to use. For me it was one less thing that could rattle or leak or break and less cost as well, so a no brainer. I do know that you get an inch or so more headroom with the sunroof, so if you have a very long torso it might be something to keep in mind.

I like the sunroof, helps you to see traffic lights when you pull up really close. On a hot day when I park my car I just vent the sunroof and my car doesn't get that hot. Makes the MINI feel bigger.

But I've had problems with it rattling I've been back into service with it 4 or 5 times already because of it, it's much better now but there still a bit of a rattle. Also when vented, or totally open there is a lot of wind noise, at least more than I experienced in other cars.

About the only time I would use it is when it's really hot out, I hate using the AC as it robs power. Though I am with you guys about the price and the one more thing to break issue.

I'm only 5' 10" so height isn't an issue.

If I don't get the sunroof I can get a better interior though . . .

I like having the sunroof but, as mentioned above, it lets in a lot of light and it is very disconcerting for the first week or two. I live in Texas and my head would get warm from the winter sun... I didn't want to find out what the summer sun would feel like, so I had limo tint applied to the inside of both sun roof panes. This is a perfect solution for me. It's almost black when the screen is closed and lets a bit of light/visability through when the screen is open.

The only time I wish that I had passed on the sunroof is when I'm on the track. I'm 6'4" and, when wearing a helmet, I bump into the sunroof frame and have to sit a bit crooked and stooped over.

I have always had it on every car I've owned...
I had a bit of an issue w/ the MINI's sunroof and wind noise but all fixed up now.

I like it for those cool weather days we get down here in the south...

I had a sunroof in my previous car. Ordered the MINI without it. Don't like getting roasted while driving.

The front both pops up and slides back, the rear one just pops up then closes to let the front one come over.
Really cools the car down fast on hot days. Driving at night with it wide open is a joy.

I got it and really like it. I get a feeling of even more freedom with it open. I have only had my car a few days and have not had any leaking/wind noise/rattling issues.

More weight up top = higher center of gravity...

Which make marginal difference unless you plan on tracking the car, and even then, tires, suspension setup, and driver skill makes a bigger difference.

Sunroof is nice if you have one. But it's not something you can't live without.

The vehicle will weigh less without a sunroof as well.

Another point to consider if you plan on doing any type of weight reduction for motorsports.

Yes. It would be a little suffocating without it. But I prefer the R53 sunroof.

I might have ordered one if it was a conventional sunroof. I like the one in our accord, I can totally close it off and block all the light. I dont' like a perforated sunshade and a sunroof that covers both front and rear seats. A conventional sunroof (front only w/a complete shade function) would be cool!! I'm glad I don't have it.

First car with a sunroof and I love it to death. I like to open that instead of the windows as the sunroof doesn't blow in wind nearly as much. I've had it open in some form or other just about every day of the two months I've had the car. Absolutely love night driving with it too.

I decided against a sunroof. If I need to bring outside inside, I'll just take the motorcycle. That said, my dad was a custom auto upholsterer his whole life and I can remember endless jobs coming to the shop as a result of leaking sunroofs, sunroofs left open in downpours, seals and gaskets going out of production....blah, blah, blah.

I personally can do without those nightmares. My wife can't be without one. I guess it's a highly personal decision.

I've had a sunroof in my last 2 cars but didn't get one on the MINI, because I rarely used them. I've seen a number of threads on wind noise with them. I also like the look of the black roof with the sunroof.

Loving mine. I was all set to put limo tint on it, but have decided to hold off at least until next summer - heat has not been an issue yet. No issues with wind noise. I really enjoy the extra light, after sitting in a stuffy cubicle all day.
