It looks like a very thin sheet of metal with plastic molded into it. It has the weight of plastic, so the metal is probably very thin. It doesn't look like it was just plated or electroformed over plastic. The rolled edge is too neat.

What do I think of it? It works and doesn't add much weight to the car. It definitely isn't a billet machined aluminum cap like the race cars used in the 1960's -- although that seems to be the inspiration for the design.

What was the cost on the labor for getting the chrome cap installed on a MC? I know there's some painting involved.

When I was at the dealer this past spring they had an MC with a chrome cap, it looked a little different than the one that comes on the MCS. Not a huge difference (actually I thought it looked a bit nicer). So the construction might be different than what the MCS drivers are getting.

Well, My Mini Dealer (East Bay Mini, CA) charges a wopping $160 an hour for labor - take a look at this link for instructions for installing the cap and you do the math on what a Dealer "might" charge for labor...

I have done the math...

If I really want a chrome gas cap that badly, I'll just get an S.

I have not had the chance to really look one over - I feel I can do the swap - I have a good friend with a paint shop - so the cost their will be for the paint - or find someone here that has paint - I do not know what the smallest portion of paint I can get - but to do the ring can't take but an few Oz's????

They make the gas cap out of "Plome". This is similar to the my interior surface...."Pleather".
