2007 MINI finally crash tested by the IIHS. not sure how i feel about the head and neck being average. and also that "A high head acceleration occurred when the dummy's head hit the steering wheel through the airbag, indicating that head injuries would be possible.".

has anybody unfortunately had any real world experience getting into a wreck with the 2007 MINI? how did the car hold up? what type of crash was it, speed, location of impact? did you have any injuries?

Thats confusing. It got worse in one category and better in another with a net effect of no change.

Tested vehicle specifications:
  • 2007 Mini Cooper 2-door
  • Class: Minicar
  • Weight: 2,460 lbs.
  • Side airbags: front and rear head curtain airbags and front seat-mounted torso airbags
  • Wheelbase: 97 in.
  • Length: 146 in.
  • Width: 66 in.
  • Engine: 1.6 L 4-cylinder
  • EPA ratings: 30 mpg city | 37 mpg highway
It's kinda neat that they made our own vehicle class!

The dealership I went to a few weeks ago had a front impact crash with an F150..needsess to say the mini cooper accordianed half way of the length of the hood. Also, they had a letter from an attorney that had just purchased the vehicle and a couple weeks later got tboned by a toyota who ran a red light (side impact)--she walked away from the accident with only minor cuts/bruises.. In my opinion, I feel they're pretty safe for what they are (being a steel cage around the go-kart), but like any car any high speed crash could have varying results...

They got the gas mileage wrong. How can I trust their ratings when they can't get the facts straight?

Got rear ended, I was stationary, she was going around 20 mph at impact. Pics in the gallery.
I was impressed with how well the MINI handled it.

That's pretty impressive. The other car's hood and nose looks like it too most of the energy.

For these tests, are the dummies strapped in, or are they evaluating the worst-case scenario where the driver isn't wearing a seat belt?
I'm having a hard time seeing a driver's head hitting the steering wheel while wearing a seat belt, but maybe that's because I have my seat almost all the way back.

seat belt on.
If the steering wheel is close to the chest and low, the tall dummy's upper body can go over the airbag and hit the steering wheel with the forehead where the airbag is relatively thin. Having the steering wheel adjusted for the correct height and angle can make a huge difference between a no bump on the forehead vs. a cracked skull.

Maybe a secondary airbag that comes down from the ceiling above the steering wheel will prevent that.

Take comfort in the fact it seems you'll be better off then in a 5 series which was the worst performer in side-impact crash tests of luxury sedans (worse then a Kia )

I wonder if they just adjusted the seat better if the test would have been fine. Airbags can always be really sensitive to seating position and with the adjustability in the MINIs seat I wouldnt doubt you could get the dummy in a real bad position for the test. Who needs safe anyways? Isnt being nibble enough to avoid a crash in the first place good enough

the 150 crash stuff is very old, and was on the last generation 150. But the photos still are impressive.
