Moonroof Do's and Don'ts - The Sequal

In my first thread on this topic, I recounted how I discovered that one should never open the moonroof (even when the sun is shining) if water from a sudden rain shower is still beading on the roof (it will dump the beaded water into your lap).

Well, today I discovered another moonroof "don't". Today was a sunny day. No beaded rain water on the roof, so I had my moonroof open. But, my windshield was dirty and spotty from a brief rain earlier in the day. So, I decided to try my windshield washer jets out for the first time.

To my shock and surprise, the Mini's washer jets sprayed the windshield washer fluid onto the windshield with such force, that it hit the windshield, then gushed and splashed up over the top of the windshield and through the open moonroof splattering and misting the top of my head (and who knows what else). I was stunned (that stuff is laced with toxic chemicals, right?). I sure didn't see that coming.

Is this normal? Or is the pressure of my windshield washer jets set a bit high?

Doesn't sound unreasonable to have happen. When I took ownership of my MINI and my MA walked me through the controls, he specifically commanded me NOT to play with the washer jets while he was standing right next to the car.

also if theres water on the roof of the car Dont take a corner fast with the window open. Ie. fast right turn with left window open = water all over you and the inside of the door as i found out tonight.

Everything is a toxin. I mean everything. Even oxygen, in high enough amounts, can kill you. It's all about the dose. Most washer fluids have that "not for consumption" warning, but, come on, have you ever seen anybody chugging this stuff? WTF?
I noticed that even with the A/C on and on vent, I can smell the washer fluid when I spray it. I don't care for the smell.
Our jets hit the middle of the windshield with enough force to be heard. Strongest washer pump I have ever seen on a car. Awesome. I figure it won't take long to run the tank out of fluid. How big can that thing be? I can then reload it with something that smells a little more pleasant and works just as well.
When our MINI is wet, I know to wait until after the first mile or two to pop open the sunroof. I have a Jeep GC, I could wash a horse with what come off the roof of that ride. One extra bath and that was committed to memory!

Yes, mine are that strong too, I used them once and never again, and won't unless I really need to. Last time it left marks (two lines of fluid running down from the jets) from the fluid down the bonet that took three washes to get off!

Wonder if they'd work well if the driver driving next to you decides to make his way into your lane while you're still there. A little wet, refreshing, toxic wake up call.

I know, I'm bad. I just really hate this behavior by other drivers not paying attention.

Hyperoxygenation is not always good. It caused Stevie Wonder's blindness.

Not to highjack this thread, but I love this idea. With my luck I'd be in jail for seriously using this bit of advice.

I've douced myself on several occasions with the windscreen jets and at night with the headlamp washers. Sometimes it feels good on a hot day.

Hmmm, I'm still skeptical, but I'm on my phone and can't give that smiley face again. I'll have to read a bit more. My suspicion is the examples that site gives is a result of the route being used, rather then the 100% O2 being used. But, then again, i"ve been wrong before.

I'll smiley for you.

Tactical military aircraft have a 100% O2 setting in the oxygen system. It's used all the time for low pressure situations and for minimizing hangovers.

Not a mini but a sunroof in my brand new (at the time) 1980 Volvo 244. Driving accross Nebraska in the summertime with my collie mix in the back. She hadn't yet shed all of her winter coat and was miserable and shedding. My wife thought she'd get ahead of the shedding by brushing her and tossing the fur out the window. The windows were closed but the sunroof was open. Within 15 seconds of starting the brushing the fur fairly exploded throughout the car. It was so thick I had to pull over and we all got out in order to breath. A Nebraska trooper pulled up behind us to see if we were ok. He laughed all the way back to his car and was still laughing as he pulled away.

Don't do it in a 'vert

I feel your pain in the "sunroof" lessons....

Had never used the washer jets in my 'vert...cruising top down one day, windshield was a little dirty, pull up to a stop light, think to myself, "self, that windshield is pretty dusty, use the wash/wipers". The windshield, me, my seat covers, my sunglasses, the shift ****, and the windscreen behind me all got wet.

I mouthed a silent "f*#k", and casually turned to my left and then to my right...wondering who might have seen that wonderfully stupid manuever.

Fortunately, no one was laughing hysterically at me...so I then laughed at myself.

Aaaah. The good ol' days. I am an Air Force Vet. Plenty of times I have hit the "Emergency O2" switch on C-130s, 'cause, by golly, I had an emergency hangover right then!

LMAO, if I was too your right, you wouldn't have see me either cause I would be on the floor board rolling around in hysterics, good story!

I maintain my previous statement after doing some research, a healthy person can not "overdose" on 100% O2 alone. There are chronic conditions that could make it deadly at 100% for prolonged periods, that's why I said, "unless you have a pre-existing health issue", COPD (chronic obstructed pulmonary disease) would be the most common. Both the examples given above are unrelated to O2 treatment and both will be treated initially with 100% O2.

Stevie's blindness from O2 is a myth, he was born with a condition and his eyes weren't fully developed, he was also 10 weeks early. Although I think this could be possible, but not because of the O2 concentration, but the lack of humidity if given in certain ways can dry out the eyes causing damage.

I'm jealous, I always wanted to be a pilot, but alas, I'm color blind and they won't give me a license

Thanks for making me think today 4xAAA, had you said water, it woulda been a no brainer and my lips would have stayed shut, lol

Sorry for thread jacking AnyMiniMineyMo, but I liked your topic... and the detour it took.
