R56 R56 MCS vs. R32 Golf MK4
R56 MCS vs. R32 Golf MK4
Anyone got performance comparison regarding these 2 cars?
I tested my MINI against my friend's VW and surprisingly, the MINI did very well. Any thoughts on how the R56 MCS will fair against the VW?
My friend only left me when the speeds went above 120kph. But the MINI is keeping up trailing very closely to the VW

Pretty sure the R32 will beat the pants off the MCS, but I'd love to hear how it goes. Good luck ratt.
Maybe it won't beat the pants off of it...but beat it nonetheless. Still, the Minis just look cooler :-D

And you won't look like a tool like most VW owners. The R32 is not that impressive. To me anyway. Come on, 30k+ for a Golf? Thats C5 territory. Yeah, 3.2L making 230 HP driven by a heavy AWD system. And its Haldex yet. Hmmm, "We'll call it AWD even though it's only all wheel drive under a loss of traction. Otherwise, we'll just drive the fronts."
I have personally owned both of the cars. both purchased new. The R32 does have raw V6power and is AWD. The only draw back to the car is that the performance parts are really incredibly expensive. Don't be surprised if an R32 takes you out. The car is really quick and usually always overlooked. There are many things i have liked about both cars and if the new one didnt only come in DSG i would be possibly thinking of getting one.
Have you tried the DSG before? This is a highly overlooked transmission. I was very impressed with it when I tested it out. It's superior to a traditional manual transmission in everyway, really. The only reason to choose a manual over it is because you like pushing in a clutch and/or you like the mantra "that's the way it was and we liked it."

Um, you can get an MCS up to 30k+ in no time! Mine is damn close and I didn't even get full leather and nav. Just sayin...
depending on drivetrain loss he is probably at 175ish whp. the dyno sheets i have seen on the R56 puts it around 165 and 172ish whp. with the mini weighing in at around 2600lbs and the R32 at around 3500lbs i think you'll be able to take him
I've driven the new DSG cars and i'm really not all that impressed. I've check out the new jetta, A3, A4 and a couple others. i'll keep my manual. Thats also why i bought the mcs in a manual. Remember too the R32 is rated at 240hp 240ft/lbs. That car is seriously a monster. And as far as not being full time AWD, most people aren't aware of the Haldex upgrade modules, GIAC flash and a couple other cool little features. If you want to see what that car is capable of check out HPA motorsports.
As far as people quoting the R32 being 30K+, i got mine new in 2004 for 28.5K I paid more for the mini i just bought. There were no options for the R32. That car has really held its value. i traded mine for 1k more than i paid new for it. You won't even touch a evo or sti for under 35K new.

btw, he has better manual tranny experience than me
I agree these new MCS are really nice and make good power. They have really elevated the bar. Just like the new GTI 2.0T i think this car will have some serious tuning capability. Thats the only problem these days is that there are so many really nice cars out there and not enough money or garage space. All in all i'm really happy with my purchase and i'm really looking forward to doing some more mods. I really can't hate on any european car because i absolutely love Mini, VW, Audi, and BMW. Coming from my previous honda's i don't think i will be going back any time soon.
Don't remember which Volks engine it was, but Road & Track did a comparo a couple of months ago between an S, a GTI, a MazdaSpeed3, an Si, and maybe another car ... the MS3 did 6.0 to 60, the S 6.2, the GTI 6.3, the Si, 6.5 or 6.6 ... something to be proud of.
I'm in the "R56S wins" camp... at least in the 1/4 mile and up to about 80-90 MPH. The additional HP on the VW will carry it past the R56S into the triple digits, though.
I've been on the track with a VR6 (similar power as the R32 minus the AWD)... the extra weight of the VW negated a lot of the additional HP. That same weight threw in some handling traits in the corners that really allowed the R56S to excel.
I'm guessing the AWD will make some of the understeer of the heavy car go away in the twisties... but will also slow the car down a bit in the straight line.
Can't wait to hear the results.

. hahaha
i'm not doubting the VW. but you would definitely be suprised how quickly the R56 can get to top or near top speed. its a shame i dont have any numbers for you guys, but it was late one night on the highway and i just stomped on it to truly 'break her in" and before i knew it i was at 135 and my girlfriend was yelling at me furiously to slow down. but yeah, the VW statistics tell us that it would probably beat our beloved r56 in a race, but it would definitely be a close one.
