Engine Temp Through the OBDC

Is there any product out there that can give real time engine (coolant) temp readings via the OBDC?

The R56 is OBDII just like the R50/53, it will work fine.

Do you know if the manifold pressuer reading is available on the R56? Scangauge's website says it isn't availbale on some cars.

MAP can be read through the SGII on my R53.
I honestly don't know if it can be read from the R56 as it uses a MAF.

Not really. It should be CAN compatible (pin 6 and pin 14 active) as R56 is. The R50/53 is ODBII different ISO - so some diagnostic tools that worked for the R50/53 do not work for R56.

(I dug into this because I was looking for a cheap scan tool).

So - ask if they are ODBII + CAN compatible (ISO 15765).

I don't think pins 6 and 14 have anything to do with monitoring basic engine functions such as coolant temp, as LynnEl originally inquired. Those pins will be needed for in depth diagnosis and trouble shooting.

I called PES Network (the ebay link) and they claim it is compatible with the 2007 MCS. So, I ordered one. I'll post a report when I've tried it.

I think it has to do with the transmiission speed (the older port being lower speed - RS232 derivate). At least that is at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_Boar...nostics#OBD-II

My mistake - I should have copied/referenced the whole source.

That looks interesting - does it draw power from the port, or run on battery/accessory power port?

The SGII gets power from the OBDII port, it powers on and off with the key.
Here it is in my car...
