Here is the service bulletin:

SI m51 04 07

also

SI m51 03 07

edit:

The BEST news - it is supposed to be covered under your new car warranty. The owner does not have to pay for the retrofit. The bulletin states this in black and white.

If the compartment comes locked, can it be opened and made to function?

Yes--depending on how/when it was done, it might require certain parts. MINI has now issued a service bulletin to list the parts, and they are to be installed free.

It's taken 4 months to get this recall!

Sigh, the surgery on mine wasn't completed today after all. At least I have a loaner...

I picked up my Mini from the dealer in early June and it does not have dash storage! I thought I would be okay. I haven't checked the production date, but the dealer told me that it just hit the lot when I picked it up.

STILL not done! Apparently there is a part missing which "didn't arrive" according to my SA. Ironic that I started the thread, yet several others have had their compartments opened before me!

I have a loaner, but it's not the same (hate the color!)...

A group of local Mini owners took a road trip over to the coast yesterday. One of the couples picked up their R56 a couple of weeks ago. I asked them about their secret compartment, but all I got were blank stares.

I reached inside and pushed the release and got looks of amazement. Apparently, their MA hadn't informed them of the added bonus. I have glad to sit in and be the receiver of the "oohs" and "ahhs."

That's funny. When we took our 1st test drive, one of the very first things my MA showed us was the secret compartment.

FWIW, just took delivery of my MCm on Saturday, and yes, the compartment works as hoped.

When I went in to pick up my car in the middle of April, my MA was on the phone when I arrived at the dealership. The first thing I did was try the compartment doors on the three cars they had inside the showroom. All of them were locked.

I asked my MA about it and he said they were still locked. I tried mine and it opened right away. Guess it was in the first shipment of cars they had received that had them open.

My car STILL isn't ready! According to the SA, the wrong parts keep arriving in the right-numbered box (how that happens I don't know), and this is day 4.

To add to that problem, my loaner car can't be driven at night, as we found out the hard way Friday. The instrument panel lights don't work, the headlights are aiimed laughably low, and the high beams won't stay on!

Considering that I've probably been following this issue the most avidly (read bitching), it's ironic that everyone else is getting the "right" parts with no problem. Something ain't "right" here.

I wonder if MINI will send me to England to get the "right" one? I volunteer.

I've had my MCS for less than a week -- so where is this mysterious secret compartment actually located?

I'm still without a red car. MY red car. Apparently the problem is the compartment cover, which is fluid silver. Those who have had theirs completed have had other colors. What is coming from the warehouse is silver, but with the door locked. I just contacted MINI USA to see if there is a silver door somewhere in the USA that can be shipped to my dealer. I'll let you know.
