Skuzzy, any idea what's involved in unlocking it? Do you have to take the dash panel off or is it accessible from below?

As far as how the "locked" ones were closed mine appears to have the super strong adhesive backed velcro closing it up. Also I am quite sure that the cars that were closed had the storage compartment and hinges removed so that if you did pry the cover out of there you would not find a storage place, but a hole in the dash that allowed you to look into the void above the glove compartment.

This is just such a gyp for the people who ponied up and ordered a car early on, sight unseen, that now they would have to sit around wondering if Mini was even going to give over the rest of their cars...

Ahhh, but the secret is what is behind the magic door? Do you dare temp fate and pry into the other realm that is the secret compartment? What mayhem would you release unto the unsuspecting masses should you but glimpse into what cannot be seen?!?!? WHAT ARE YOU TO RELEASE THE SPIRITS WHICH CANNOT BE CONTAINED IN THE MIND'S EYE????!!!!

I HAVE LOOKED INTO THE LIGHT AND YET I AM BLIND!!!!! ARRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH!!!

The above is not the logical thought processes of a sane person. Be kind to the critter as he crawls about the board making really stupid statements like the above. Thank you for your patience.

First thing I asked my MA at delivery was about the upper storage bin. He said MINI is sealing them all and there's no fix. First thing I did when I actually got in the car, opened the "sealed" storage and put CDs in it. : )

My car was built on 3/14 and arrived here to me on 4/12 and the upper glove box works just fine

Larry was on the phone when I arrived to pick mine up. So I opened the doors to the cars they had sitting in the showroom and tried out the secret compartment in each of them. All were sealed.

When we sat in minie, I asked him about it and he said they were still being sealed. It wasn't until I got home that I tried it out for myself. Opened just fine.

That first week, I put my wallet, keys and cell phone in the compartment when I went to umpire a high school softball game. When I got home, I couldn't find any of them. Searched through my bag in the back and circled the car two or three times before figuring out they were in the secret compartment. So secret I couldn't even remember I had used it.

Yeah, we tried all the showroom models too. Not one opened. Thought that was it for any hope in ours. I guess the MINI gods have blessed our rides!

I haven't forgotten about mine, it's my favorite feature. Probably because of all this buzz about'em.

It was my understanding that the March builds were the first ones that had the compartment open, so I was expecting it to be usuable. Although there really isn't much space in it, I like the secret space for the wow factor when you press open the sides and show it off to unsuspecting passengers.

It's the perfect size for cds. Plus a pen and notepad. Ever notice how impossible it is to dig those out of the glovebox when you want them?

Maybe it's the glovebox that should have been wired shut. It's not worth a whole lot. Whoops, then I wouldn't be able to keep my pop cold. Scratch that idea.

The R56 glovebox holds more than my 1999 Benz did -- it was, literally, a glove box. But, the way the door swings is dumb.

+1 Seriously, all I want is my "secret" compartment and no more tranny problems. Is that too much to ask for?

I will find out in the next few days whether my secret compartment is functional or not, but I think I will have it as Skuzzy's works and we have the same MA. Sadly, I do not think I will use it much (if at all) as I am fairly famous for not carrying a lot of "stuff." That said, I wish (cosmically speaking) that there was a way for those who do want access to their secret compartment to have it...I would gladly give up mine on your behalf. From my perspective...owning an '03 w/ no secret anything...it's no big deal. In fact, I thought the feature was only going into cars w/ a 6-CD changer, so the fact that other MINIs are getting it will always remain a fluke in my mind.
