I drove 4 hours on Saturday. The guy persistently claimed it had NO mechanical issues. Well, the passenger airbag light was on and the guy was real pushy and wanted to meet at the gas station. Now I know why.
NEXT DAY the CEL comes on. Took it to Autozone real quick and they printed out a p0015. The Mini dealer says Mini doesn't use a 'P' for their codes and claims if they scan it, it might be something different. They can't give me a loaner until next week and it's my only car. I just got out of a rental.
Either way, this guy's on my ***** list. He's already ignoring my texts.
thank you I will be reading them now.
One thing I want to add real quick is when I first start it up (cold), I get a little idle surge for about a minute...

Unfortunately there was no time for an inspection. I went with a good friend who had to be at work the next morning, at again an almost 2 hour drive away. Tight situation.
well I went out and pulled out the exhaust cps and it was really dirty. I cleaned it off and the light's still on so I guess I'll order one. I have to ask, can I check the resistance of one of these and see if it's out of spec?
You have to clear the code with a code reader to make the check engine light turn off.
Some people say you can unhook the battery for a while and that resets the code, but I've always used a code reader to clear codes and have no experience with unhooking the battery to clear them.
Anyone interested in maintaining their own car should have a code reader.
How's the car battery? Did you have it checked? Often times a bad battery will give sensor based errors as the sensor relies on electronic signals to be sent back and forth to computer.
Battery is like new. After going back out 20 minutes later, the light was gone. I took it to Advance anyway. He was able to see the code on his scanner, but it's cleared now and he thinks that should completely solve this problem. Thanks A LOT guys.
I would have it scanned again and read the code. Also, i would inspect the wires to that plug and the plug itself to the sensor.
Also, try to get ahold of the old owner. But it sounds like you were blown off. You could try to have the MINI dealership pull the MINI service history, but they might not have taken it there once it was out of warranty.
he refuses to answer. I tried calling him today. if anyone wants this jerks # I'd be glad to give it out as a # to avoid.
I had it scanned today and it's the same p0015. connection and wires look fine.
Simply put... Buying a used car is not something you rush out to do without some sort of pre-inspection. You might be shizt out of luck getting ahold of the previous owner. Hopefully the problems you're experiencing is minor and can be resolved quickly.
agreed. but if he wiped out this code completely knowing it would arise again, what was an inspection going to do?
You are right that the code would probably not come up during an inspection but did you even test drive it a bit before you bought it? You mention he met you at some place other than his residence and was real pushy which would draw a red flag in my opinion.
I've bought a handful of used vehicles in my day. Some from private parties and some at a dealership. Been fairly lucky that the cars I've purchased nothing terrible occurred. Buying used is really a crap shoot but if you don't take the time to at the least take it to a reputable shop to check it out and or something doesn't feel right about the car, the seller or the situation you're dealing with I'd pass on the deal.
I don't think it is helping if all you have to write about is pre-inspection. The guy needs advice not a reminder of how to buy a used car. He owns it now. Just wish I could assist but I know nothing about error codes.

yes I did. it was nowhere near as sluggish as it is now with the light on. just like when I had the light off for that day, it was fine.

No truer words said!
Best advise is to take it to a reputable mini indy shop instead of thowing parts at it without a proper diagnose tool. My intention wasn't to lecture the kid but I hate when people with good intent get hosed on a deal.
I'm in his corner and I hope Hairy gets it sorted out with minimum grief.
