Short Power Loss On Highway Followed By A Check Engine Light.
Just bought a 08 mini clubman S (automatic trans) last week or so. It had a bad bettery in it so i replaced it with a brand new one today. about 2 days ago i did an entire seafoam treatment. car was running better than ever.
But i was driving home tonight on the highway doing about 60mph driving pretty easy. then there was a small vibration feeling and a short loss of power in the engine for about 10 seconds.
The check engine light came on during the time the engine was lagging then turned off when the car stopped lagging.
It happened again a few seconds later and went for about 10 seconds again.
The check engine light did the same thing and then shut back off.
drove the car about 5 miles. stopped at the store and i was pulling out and the check engine light came back on and has stayed on but this time with no engine problems.
The car is running fine but has the check engine light on.
a few notes: i already checked the gas cap. also the problem accrued shortly after my fuel gauge went into the red zone with about 45 miles until empty. i filled it up with my usual premium grade fuel from shell.
any ideas?

I see a couple of other things that need attention in that picture besides the broken air hose. Firstly, the small hose that comes off your broken one attaches to the valve cover. This is a PCV hose and the clip that holds it securely in place is missing. This could also be a source of unmetered intake air so it should be secured. The part looks like this;

The other end of that small hose should have a ty-wrap to hold it secure as well. You can see where it used to be so just install a new one and you're good to go.
In addition, your turbocharger oil feed line is missing the heat shield which was recall from Mini so call your dealer and see if they will install that for free. It will prolong the life of your oil feed line which is expensive and no fun when it fails and leaks oil all over the very hot turbo.
Lastly, and it's minor but look at the front of the valve cover. See the wire that is attached to a ground stud right in the middle? That wire is pulled really tight and will break eventually. Loosen the nut and swivel the terminal counter clockwise to relieve this condition before it turns bad.

Thanks! i will work on that!
If you're buying a new intake pipe don't invest too much time into fixing the PCV hose on it. There is a new hose attached to the intake tube that has a ziptie on it.
Those clips that hold the PCV line into the valve cover are missing on about half of the cars we see through here. Being as it's under vacuum it has an extremely slim chance of causing a problem, if it was to be holding pressure then it would be more cause for concern.
